KOCHI: Even as India is readying to roll out a red carpet to Chinese premier Xi Jinping, a team of students and youth from China was in for some bitter treatment when they landed here on Friday.

The 100-member team, whose itinerary included a visit to the Cochin Shipyard Limited and Kochi Refineries Ltd (KRL), was denied permission by the home ministry citing sensitivity of these installations.


"They are on a 10-day youth exchange programme visiting our major industries and development projects. But we learnt about the home ministry decision only after reaching here for the four-day leg," said S L Meena, deputy secretary, ministry of youth and sports.

An embarrassed team of officials from the ministry of skill development, hosting the Chinese delegation, couldn't do anything to change the decision. And the delegation ended up seeing shopping malls, beaches and folklore museums.

"They had a good time watching Kathakali and enjoyed sightseeing. But we do hope to get permission from the Cochin Port Trust to visit the facility," said.

I mentioned the shipyard so far

And yes, a Chinese drone flying from Pakistan can fly very close to the INS Vikrant and photograph it as it would be in international airspace. The Russians do that to US aircraft carriers all the time.
