History of Pakistan's Automobile Industry

Pakistani auto industry is in shambles right now bo doubt and on the other had India is on its way to be the 2nd largest producer within a few years, predicted by 2017.

Any one here whining about protection given to Tata and other Indian giants in this field. Then yeah even Samsung of Korea had protection in the earlier stages. If the company can't compete then what is the point of putting it into level playing field.

Pakistan in my view has failed in auto sector. Giving MFN to India won't make it any worse because already Pakistan doesn't have any home grown car company, and japs rule there. So if you can use jap cars what's wrong with Indian ones. Infact we can give tough competition to the japs.

Indian cars are better priced and are equally good in quality. We Indians feel proud to own an Indian car instead of an used and refitted Japnese cars like Pakistanis do.

amby took Indians for granted. Maruti/Suzuki still rules because they cared about consumers.
anyway, its not necessary to be good in every field.
Indian television and other white good industry was decimated by koreans, and I dont really mind it.
These people should have responded better.

I think micromax is trying to get back in TV market

Sadly now a days the companies have monopoly over the whole industry and wouldn't let the Govt change the import policy or let any new comers into the industry or country.

Pakistan was the the First Islamic Country in the world which made a 4 Wheel Drive Jeep of its own in late 60's called NAYA DAUR in collaboration with WILLIS jeep.

Pakistan was the First Islamic Country in the world which was about to manufacture its own Motocycles in early 70's with the collaboration of JAVA motorcycle but the process was soon abandoned.

Pakistan was the First Islamic Country in the world which had made its own prototype Diesel Engines by the Lahore based company called BECO (Battala Engineering Company).

And last but not the least;

Pakistan really was the First Islamic Country in the world which actually made a Motor Car of its own in early 70's with the collaboration of SKODA Motors. It was named SKOPAK. The prototypes had been made, the production was about to be started soon, but alas.......
SKOPAK made in Pakistan

The 1971 war with the separation of East Pakistan, had its toll in each and every aspect. The country met an economic shock, the economic readjustments by Mr Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, lead to a stagerring 127% (approx)depriciation in the value of Pakistani Ruppee. All the industries were Nationalised and...

The production of NAYA DAUR jeeps was stopped as their production in the country was not cost effective by then.

The Motorcycle project was blown to pieces.

The BECO was nationalised and was converted into PECO (Pakistan Engineering Company) which instead of making Diesel Engines was put on manufacturing PECO Bicycles......

And SKOPAK CAR project died forever.

In 1980s another Pakistani company tried to Break into Pakistan's Automobile Market which is Dominated By Foreign companies and has no room for Home grown talent.
'Proficient', a brainchild of a roadside mechanic, late Khalil-ur-Rahman, in the early eighties was said to be successful but lacked any patronage from any quarter whatsoever and instead it was reported that the government then introduced a policy of concessionary rate on CBU of Suzuki pickups, same capacity as the one that was conceived locally and to put the last nail in the coffin the late mechanic though he would get attention in the capital and thus shifted his garage there but could not succeed. Though the children of the late mechanic are still carrying on their father's projects, they would rather keep a low profile till things finally come out by themselves.

Dear Countrymen, it is my extremely humble request. Please do not make fun of your country. Yes I admit we have a lot of shortcomings, but who has'nt.

Please, take care of this country as it has been caring for all of us. Instead of making fun, just try to figure out What went wrong and where?

You can well imagine that Pakistan was way ahead in late 60's then most of the Asian Giants, and the proof of its greatness is that although...

Pakistan could not continue the production of its Jeeps, although

Pakistan could not start the manufacturing of its own Motorcycles, although

Pakistan could not continue with its production of Diesel Engines, & although

Pakistan could not continue its project of SkoPak Cars, yet it succeeded in doing something which only 6 countries in the world had done before.

I hope @Safriz forgive me for my transgression on this thread .

Mahindra & Mohammed was originally incorporated in 1945 by the brothers J.C. Mahindra and K.C. Mahindra and Malik Ghulam Muhammad in Ludhiana, Punjab to trade steel. Following the Partition of India in 1947, Malik Ghulam Muhammad left the company and emigrated to Pakistan where he became the first finance minister of the new state. In 1948, K.C. Mahindra changed the company's name to Mahindra & Mahindra...

Building on their expertise in the steel industry, the Mahindra brothers began trading steel with UK suppliers. They also won a contract to manufacture Willys Jeeps in India and began producing them in 1947.

See a lot of mahindra's in South africa mostly for bakkies ('trucks' for outsider lingo). Truth of the matter is in our farming community, mahindra started off good but stumbled on multiple issues - quality was not good especially with suspension etc. It was and is common to see it break down after around 60,000km of rough driving. A stark comparison to locally made Hilux which is a donkey .. an understatement... The second issue is supply chain. they have the network but no infrastructure to keep the parts flowing or in inventory.

Tata on the otherhand was all over east and central africa since the 70s with their licenced mercedes trucks. Indica is around here but again the same challenges of parts; sometimes you have to wait for months.

Still a long way to go to meet good hardy quality but it is a great start.

Pakistan's auto industry is proof that socialism fails. It's not to late though. With Pakistan's strategic position, skilled workers, and scenic beauty, Pakistan could easily become one of the fastest growing economies and a major tourist attraction. You just need better relations with India and stop Afghan terrorism from further spreading. This will gain the confidence of the west and drive investment. I have made in Pakistan clothes and they are of very high quality.

Best of luck. Pakistan Zindabad! :pakistan::usflag:

.
we had rich business man in the past but no one other than feroz khan invested in this field

Adam motors plant is for sell someone should buy that plant and under jv with other automobile industry bring up something of quality

Considering domestic automobile industry in pak is non existing.they can become something like Tata motors for Pakistan
agar baigerat Bhutto paida na hotta to pakistan ka yeh hal na hotta if beco had remaind Under it's owners we would have put tata and bilari on shame
and east-pakistan would be still east-pakistan
