Back to life from jaws of death in Saudi Arabia
Wednesday December 20 2006 09:42 IST
ALAPPUZHA: Losing one’s way in Saudi Arabia could mean losing one’s life. Jojo Joseph, 31, a native of Mariyapuram, near Edathua, in Alappuzha district stumbled on this great truth on Monday. What saved him from the sword was the timely intervention of the Union Government.

Jojo, an employee of an electronic firm in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, who had gone to a place near Madina to see his wife Sheeba, a nurse, and their new-born, lost his way and ended up on the road to Madina.

Jojo, who did not know that the road was out of bounds for people belonging to other religions during the pilgrimage season, was arrested by the police at Al-Azeez, a place near Madina. The Saudi religious court ordered that Jojo be beheaded at noon (IST) on Tuesday ‘for trespassing into the area.’Jojo conveyed the news to his folks in Mariyapuram who contacted Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy.

Chandy, who was in Kottayam, directed his office to send fax messages to the Indian embassy in Saudi Arabia, Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi, Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahmed and T K A Nair, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister. “It was a race against time,” said Oommen Chandy.

“After sending the messages, I called up Vayalarji, Ahmed and Nair. They swung into action in no time. The embassy came to know about the incident only when they received my fax,” Chandy said.

Chandy spoke to Jojo on his cellphone who gave him the name of the police station where he was lodged.

At the instance of the Prime Minister’s office, the External Affairs Secretary contacted the Saudi Government and convinced the authorities that Jojo had lost his way and that there was no ulterior motive in moving along the road.

Sorry to burst your bubble; but I think you have been a victim of Anti-Saudi Propaganda.

The Indian ambassador to the Kingdom said yesterday that a non-Muslim Indian expatriate who strayed into the “Muslims Only” part of the holy city of Madinah earlier this week was never facing any stiff penalties for his trespass. His comments were made to clarify media reports in India that said the man faced a long prison sentence or even the death penalty for his alleged crime.

“It’s all fabricated stories and in fact Jojo was never tried or given the death penalty,” Indian Ambassador M.O.H. Farook told Arab News yesterday. “Rather he was released (on Tuesday) by the Saudi police.”

Police detained Jojo Joseph, a non-Muslim from the south Indian state of Kerala, early this week while he was traveling in a taxi within the area of the holy city near the Prophet’s Mosque that is reserved for Muslims.

The only thing you are stuck with are your Anti-Saudi thoughts

maybe you will trust this:

An Indian worker in Saudi Arabia will not be executed for trespassing into the "only Muslim" part of the holy city of Medina, despite demands for his execution.

Jojo Joseph, who hails from Kerala, was arrested by the Saudi police for allegedly trespassing Medina earlier this week while he was on his way to hospital to see his wife, who had given birth to their child.

Indian ambassador to the kingdom Farook told Arab News on Wednesday that Joseph would not face stiff penalties for his alleged trespass.

He was never tried, did not face an enduring prison sentence, nor the death penalty for his alleged crime, Farook said, denying media reports.

Farook said Joseph had made "enough noise" about his arrest and told his family members that he could be beheaded, but he was released on Tuesday after being detained for three days.[/

"The Saudi authorities took a lenient view of the case after they were convinced that the man did not deliberately commit the mistake of entering the holy city's restricted areas," the ambassador said.

There is no such recorded incident where a non-Muslim has been executed for trespassing restricted space in Medina or Mecca.

So where are the reports of non-muslim beheading for entering mecca? :P

I'm genuinely interested.

Why can't non-Muslims enter the Mecca ?

you need to stop spreading propaganda against Saudi Arabia.

Non-Muslims are not permitted to enter Mecca. Road blocks are stationed along roads leading to the city, with officials conducting occasional random checks to confirm that intending visitors are legitimate pilgrims and in possession of the required documentation. While one of the purpose of these checks is to ensure that the visitor is, in fact, a Muslim, they also serve to prevent illegal immigrants including guest workers whose visas have expired or who have not attained the extra permit required to perform the pilgrimage.

I am still waiting for your story.

While one of the purpose of these checks is to ensure that the visitor is, in fact, a Muslim,

Which is what I'm puzzled about.

Why cant a non-Muslim enter the city ? Is it wrong for a non-Muslims to enter and have a look around ?
