Hindu Federation condemns ‘extremist’ group for violating religious freedom

The Hindu Federation of Sri Lanka (HINDFOS) yesterday alleged that Islamic extremism was growing rapidly in Sri Lanka and urged the government to take immediate steps to neutralise it.


Addressing a press conference in Colombo, HINDFOS, President N Arunkaanth said that a Hindu pooja had been banned in Kotahena recently by an extremist group.


Arunkaanth said it was a violation of the people’s fundamental rights to impose such bans on religious ceremonies.


Arunkaanth also claimed the Hindus had been threatened not to take part in poojas in the Kotahena kovil. "We have proof which can be be produced in court," he stressed.


HINDFOS urged the Attorney General, the police and as well as the government to take immediate action to ensure the religious freedom of Hindus.


"The pooja ceremony was scheduled to be held last Friday (09). But it could not be held. Now, those who scuttled it are saying something different. They agreed to let Hindus hold the ceremony at the Police Station, but later refused to do so," Arunkaanth added.


Arunkaanth said the situation was far worse in the Eastern Province. "We are not against Muslims but we are against extremism," he added.

The likes of Bodu Bala sena (Buddhist power force) also came to prominence as reactionary forces to increasing fundamentalist Islamic extremism.. This is a dangerous development

the increase in reactionary forces in every community is dangerous, and i do not deny that reactionaries in the muslim community have increased in the last 15 years, whether in lanka or in maldives or in india.

what is needed is for progressives in every community to come under a umbrella and oppose the reactionaries.

Why should they comment on India idiot?

to give some words of wisdom to the india sanghis perhaps.

Doesn't really matter.. This is a grave situation.. Colombo is a city with a majority of minorities live in.. Both Tamil and Muslims.. In area's like Kotahena they have coexisted peacefully for centuries.. Until recently when these Muslim extremist organizations seems to have taken hold, Sri Lanka is a multi religious multi cultural nation.. No one has the right to deny another group practicing it's faith and festivals

They're removing themselves from the mainstream society and in turn making the general public very uncomfortable.. Also there have been increase in attacks on traditional Mosques and Sufi's and now it seems they're attacking Hindu's

This cannot be excused.. The GOSL need to nip this in the bud before all hell breaks loose

This is the point. Aggressive Islamist policies have brought out aggressive responses too. I've seen this in Europe, India and Australia.. You can only expect other communities to stay quiet for so long.

no doubt, but just so that it doesn't appear or become a establishment attack on a single community, i will repeat that reactionary elements in all communities must be tackled.
