An army helicopter crashed Monday morning in the Siachen glacier area of Jammu and Kashmir, defence sources said here. The helicopter was on a routine sortie, officials told IANS, adding that the two people on board, the pilot and co-pilot, emerged safely.

New Delhi: An Army helicopter, on air maintenance operations, crashed this morning in the icy heights of Siachen glacier but both the pilots survived the accident and were being evacuated for treatment, Army sources said.

The advanced light helicopter (ALH) 'Dhruv', flown by two pilots of the Army Aviation Squadron, crashed in the northern glacier at around 8:00 AM, the sources said.



They said of the two pilots, one had fallen into a crevasse on the glacier and was being moved to safety. The other pilot has suffered minor cuts, the sources said.

"Both the pilots are safe and are being evacuated for further treatment," they said.

The Dhruv ALH Mark III, of the Army Aviation Squadron, had taken off from Leh this morning for Siachen as part of air maintenance operations, the sources said.

Flying conditions above the Glacier in Siachen are some of the toughest in the world, especially for an inherently unstable flying machine like a helicopter. That the AAC Helos are flying there at all is a testimony to the indomitable skills of their Crews. :tup:

even after crash i think the dhruv will be repaired and fly again unlike other helicopters (only recovery of that machine might be difficult there due to terrain)

Thank god. Our oilots are safe. It's Damn hard to fly a rotary wing machine above to those glaciers. And our army needs more training before inducting its LCH there to avoid these situations. I hope IAF will help them that how to fly a machine above those glaciers safely and skillfully.

Both pilots safe, that too in the merciless terrain on Siachen. Can only be possible in a Dhruv Helicopter. :tup:

The cockpit section of the fuselage is of Kevlar and carbon-fibre construction; it is also fitted with crumple zones and crashworthy seats.

Your doubts and fears are quite unfounded. The Army has been flying Helos there for a long time esp the Cheetahs which do the most difficult sorties. So neither training or experience is an issue. The flying conditions are the biggest issue; mostly the weather which is fiercely unpredictable. Then because of the terrain, there are sudden and severe up-drafts and down-drafts as well as cross-winds as the Helos transit the Mountains and Valleys during transit. Not to forget that the Helicopter is inherently the most unstable flying machine.
So there is nothing that the IAF or even god can do to guarantee mishap-free sorties.
