What's new

Hasina signed her resignation yesterday

Respectfully no, I am not sure where you are getting this. westminister is called the mother of parliament precisely because it has reigned supreme for so long.

You really are on dodgy territory now!

Victoria famously refused to appoint Robert Peel as prime minister because of his policies. He was only appointed after her husband brokered a compromise over key policies.

It’s a matter of record that she regularly amended laws before signing them.

And women only got the vote in 1918.

Does the above look like a democracy to you?!!!

You have fallen for the bbc world service clap trap by Mark Tully 🤣🤣🤣

.
Parliament only became sovereign after the death of Victoria.

Victoria chose prime ministers and amended key laws she did not like.
My question is has she really handed in her resignation? As I have seen nothing On the news about this to verify it.

Is it just a rumour?

Can you pls answer my fricking question? I have seen no reports this.

You have not defined your parameter and definition of democracy. You keep asking me if US with slavery is democracy or lack of womens vote is democracy?

Universal suffrage has been a evolving over time.

You are postulating autocracy for BD because democracy is supposedly bad, but dude what is democracy to you? Unless we understand where we stand we maybe talking about different things.

Regarding peel can you cite any evidence that Victoria officially blocked peels ascension. Did she give any royal proclamation on this effect. Her intervention extended to not asking peel to form government.... effect he still did and parliament continued.... she simply delayed the inevitable and was punished by effective banishment from any policy decision making for the rest of her life.

She has not resigned....

The OP simply hypothesised that hasina has signed her resignation by her actions during the India trip.

Western based democracy with capitalism will not effectively lift the masses out of abject and extreme poverty.

I implore people to look at the Singaporean model, they have been effectively been a dictatorship while paying lip service to democracy.

It's been rigged for one political party stay in power.

Absolutely.

Singapore is a one party state.

Look at how they intimidate the opposition.

Democracy means when everyone gets to vote and key organs of state are accountable to the representatives of the voters. And any laws can be changed by the majority.

If only some people voting is democracy then BAL is democratic. Because they too allow some people to vote.

The west actively promote democracy amongst developing poor countries, as its low hanging fruit for west to easily manipulate.

I see, so your definition of democracy is selective franchise. That would not be considered democracy by todays norm but would have been democratic model a century ago. Your argument is logically consistent in that within those terms BAL is democratic.

But on the basis of todays term it is a autocracy. You have a right to your opinion but it is a very colonial one where the people of the colonies were considered too unsophisticated to deserve participatory inclusive democracy. The colonial masters thought the colonial savages deserved nothing better than than their whip hand. I would contend BD who do not support BAL and those are the majority do not want continuation of the status quo.

BAL is only democratic if you consider Victorian Britain democratic.

I consider both BAL and Victorian Britain as autocratic/dynastic.

Pre-civil rights USA is a cesspit hundreds times worse than current BAL.

I am a big fan of Hasina but unfortunately she signed her resignation yesterday.

Social media means politicians cannot escape poor optics. And ever poorer deal making.

The series of bad deals she has signed, as quid pro quo for Indian support for her regime, will mean BAL cannot rig the next election.

BD military will only tolerate a dictator in uniform not in civilian clothes - as her father found to his cost.

So there will have to be an election. And next election cannot be rigged - it will just result in mass violence.

Unless of ofcourse Modi can come up with something extraordinary just before the election e.g. a deal on Teesta. But will people trust an 11th hour deal? It will seem insincere and fake!!!

Pre BJP, India probably has 20-30% support in BD. Thanks to BJP, and their army of haters, India is now a toxic brand in BD.

Great news that Hasina has been forced to resign.

I don't expect you to answer these rhetorical question, but at least don't be under the illusion that Bangladesh is going to turn into a real "middle-income" country if BAL stays in power 10 more years.

Dude, I will answer your post with some respect as you are just being emotional here and unable to see the bigger picture.

Do you seriously think you know more about the BD economy than IMF, ADB, World Bank combined?

No you do not and so I suggest you don't say definitely otherwise. I am just agreeing with them and so if you really think your knowledge and predictions are better than theirs then you are obviously wasting time in whatever you currently are doing.

All these things happening in BD, they have known about for years and yet they still publish these predictions. I think they know far more than some random pdf posters here.

PS - When did I ever say there were plenty of jobs for graduates now in BD? Please quote that specific post as you are mistaken here.

@BananaRepublicUK

It is ok as these guys are just emotional beings.

It is hard to take these guys seriously when one minute they say that BD has an extremely strong economy due to some positive report and then the next week that BD is doomed. They have no consistency in their views as it seems to change with the way the wind is blowing.

It is a fact that democracy has not delivered any 3rd world country to first world successful economy since WW2 and these other examples of colonial powers is totally different as they looted continents to get rich and also only allowed a small percentage of their population in some cases to take the vote till after they became industrialised. UK only only allowed all men the vote in the 1910s as one example and that was well after it was industrialised.

I am out of this thread as it is pointless.

No democracy in the history of the world has become rich.

Show me just one!?

Saying Victorian Britain and slave owning US were democratic is just pathetic!!!

Even the Roman republic’s limited tryst with democracy failed and was rebuilt under Augustus the dictator.

Democracy does not lead to wealth. It is a means to preserve wealth. Which is why we need to wait until a critical mass of people have wealth.

.
One thing I am certain of is that post-Hasina - especially with elections - BD will be back to the dark ages.
🤣 Really ? Then make her immortal if you can!

No country has developed through democracy. EVER!

Name one?

Democracy comes after development not before.
Okay fine. So if no democracy but dictatorship is needed , then why only BAL? Why not others?

Also why the arrangements of fake election and wasting tax money if we need dictatorship?

China and Pakistan should provide support to BD military to get rid of Hasina.
You are kidding right ? China didn't move a muscle when Imran Khan was ousted. At least Putin claimed that USA is punishing Imran Khan.

So how come that China will ousted Hasina? Chinese policy is bigger than your imagination!

And Pakistan will help us get rid of Hasina? Pakistan is a country that can't get rid off an imported govt , so how it can help Bangladesh?

What influences Pakistan have inside Bangladesh? Oh come on , don't feel so big!
