VADODARA: Not knowing about Lothal or Dholavira can be blasphemous. But you could be pardoned if you haven't heard of Dayabhai no dhoro, Dhrosan timba, Vadhi Vala Khetar, Gorivatano timbo. These are just a few of the 750 Indus Valley civilization sites spread across Gujarat.

This treasure of the state, so far known only to archaeologists, will be now available for people to explore.

Thanks to MS University's Department of Archaeology and Ancient History and Japan's Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN), all the Harappan sites of Gujarat dating back to 3,600 BC (5,600 years old) to 1,500 BC (3,500 years old), have been accurately mapped.

As part of the Gujarat Harappan Sites Gazetteer Project, MSU and RIHN will publish a gazetteer to not only locate the sites geographically but also throw light on artefacts collected from these sites, excavators behind the discovery and the period to which they belong.

"Gujarat has one of the largest concentrations of Harappan sites as the Indus Valley civilization had flourished here for nearly 2,000 years. While there are few sites which date back to 5,600 years, Gujarat has a huge concentration of sites between the 2,500 BC to 1,700 BC period," says MSU's professor P Ajithprasad, who along with the head of RIHN's Indus Project professor T Osada completed the digital mapping.

The challenge so far was locating the sites. For instance, Zekhda in Patan has also been listed as Amasari no timbu (a local name of the mound where the site is located) by some. "Now, we have mapped the actual location and mentioned all the names of such sites so that there is no confusion," says Ajithprasad, whose team used global positioning and geographic information systems to map the sites.

This will be uploaded on a popular geographical site and specialized software to make it public. Archaeologists globally have been interested in Gujarat's Harappan treasure as when the urban phase of the Indus Civilization started declining from 1900 BC onwards in other parts of the continent especially the Indus Valley (from Punjab to Arabian coast), the decline did not happen in Gujarat.

"In Gujarat, the civilization continued to flourish for another 400 years or so," he says.

. . . .
Isn't Harappa in Pakistan....?

That is a bone stupid thing to say.
Next you will be asking "Isn't Indus Valley in Pakistan .....?
Then your gonna loose your marbles by asking "does Gujrat not fall outside of the Indus Valley"?

What you see is nothing less than the complete plunder of everything under our own sacred soil and the legacy of our forefathers by Indian's.

* Civilizations are never neat and tidy. Pakistan is the homeland of IVC but just like when I eat bread some crumbs fall around me. So with IVC, you will find crumbs littered beyond the homeland of IVC, that is the area adjacent to the Indus River in Pakistan. You can find these crumbs in Afghanistan and India.

Harappa is a city and Harappan is a culture which is rooted in our culture like it is for Pakistan either accept world history or believe the crap they teach you in your Madrasa

In the Sanskrit language of Ancient India, the Indus was called the Sindhu. Other rivers such as the Sarasvati join the Indus as it flows down to the sea. The Indus Valley civilisation is sometimes called the Sindhu-Sarasvati civilisation.

This is part of our holy books the Vedas and for somebody to say it is not part of our history is a moron

That pretty sweet. I am planning to visit Gujrat next year, so cant wait to see these treasures. To finally see our rich heritage that we have been reading in school since we were little kids is really exciting!

Kaym cho tamhe? Besides, to really see the IVC in full color, I'd suggest going to MohenjaDaro rather than bits and pieces in Gujurat.

The River Sarasvati is mentioned in the Vedas for many years people in the west did not believe it exisited until NASA sats found it and proved it flowed through our region.

Isn't Harappa in Pakistan....?

Haroppa was among the first site to be excavated. So the Indus Valley Civilization is called Haroppan civilization. However hundreds of sites related to it (pro-Haroppan, Mature Haroppan and Later Haroppan) have been excavated from Baluchitan to Western U. P ...from Southern Afghanistan to Gujrat and North Maharastra...

Before you call me a "moron" learn how to spell it. You can have your Saraswati pipedream but why must you append it with Indus? Harrapa is in Pakistani Punjab so take your f*lthy hands off it. What has Vedas got to do with IVC? Just to teach you history the Vedic period came after IVC

Do look at some facts in case you have got delusional - click below.

Harrapa:Harappa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mohenjo Daro:Mohenjo-daro - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They are the IVC, the jewel in the crown of IVC. Guess what? Your gonna have to come to Pakistan to se them, bang in centre of the people you hate so much. The Sindhi and Punjabi get first rights to them and that would include even the indian Punjabi's but fact is majority of IVC falls within Pakistan with nominal crumbs in neighbouring areas of Afghanistan and India.

You can always smoke some Ganja and imagine they are on the Ganges or whatever .... !!!

Do your understand the basic diffrence between a city called Harappa and Harappan culture? also know as the Indus valley civilization and can you read English the the thread says Harappan not Harapppa as in the city!

Your trying to change world history mate and put your own twist on it but the fact remains IVC does not only belong to Pakistan either accept it or move on.

You don't need NASA to find it. Just have a look at Google Earth and follow the dry riverbed of the Hakra Gaggar which goes into Pakistan so nothing substantive there. The map you have downloaded just shows the Indus River and the irrigated area in Punjab and Sindh, most of which is in Pakistan. What is the might significant thing there you want to show?

In fact the red strip in the south is Sindh, the wider red strip in north is Pakistani Punjab and the dark blackish area is Indian Punjab. Pak-India border is bang on the area where the red merges with the blackish area.

Fine but you guy's just keep your paws on your side of the international border.
