Hambantota Port: Joint venture between China and Sri Lanka begins operations

Why would India want to control an worthless empty airport ?
The main logic is to keep an eye on the Chinese and to prevent the Chinese from having easy airborne assets for their naval logistics. In short, prevent an easy naval base for at least forty years.

It's about $300 million or so of debt to pay.

Also, there are many business ideas you can come up with for an airport, other than it being an airport.

Or maybe the Industrial Zone by China will turn it into a paradise after all.

Its easier to work on some defense partnership with SL.

Pretty sure the SL army/navy would be keeping their eyes on the port anyway.


But I suppose there is nothing better than having assets on the ground AND in the Air.

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Saturday that Sri Lanka had joined China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) Initiative with the launch of operations at the Hambantota Port through a joint venture between China and Sri Lanka.

The port was handed over to the China Merchant Ports Holdings (CMPH) on a 99-year lease agreement at a ceremony, and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority together with CMPH will manage the operations of the southern port.

“Today we have made arrangements for the management and long-term success of the Hambantota Port. This Sri Lankan and Chinese joint venture, which has taken over the management of this port, and its operations will ensure an additional port in the Indian Ocean,” Wickremesinghe said.

“The Hambantota Port will add to Sri Lanka’s concept of transforming into a hub in the Indian Ocean.”


The Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative, proposed by China in 2013, aims to build trade and infrastructure networks connecting Asia with Europe and Africa along the ancient Silk Road routes.

The prime minister said that with the development of the Hambantota Port, steps were also being taken to construct an economic zone in Hambantota which would see hundreds of foreign investors launching factories within this zone in the near future.

“This will definitely help strengthen our economy,” Wickremesinghe said.

CMPH said in a statement that the Hambantota Port will be the largest multi-purpose port in Sri Lanka and also the island nation’s single largest private investment.

“The aim of the government of Sri Lanka and the China Merchant Port Holdings is to transform Hambantota port from a “transshipment hub” to a “total logistics hub” of the Indian Ocean region,” the company said.

For CMPH, Hambantota is its second investment in Sri Lanka, the first being the Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT). The CICT, which is the island nation’s only deep-water terminal to date, has already notched 2 million TEU containers.

In July, the Sri Lakan government together with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority signed an agreement with CMPH for the development and operation of the Hambantota Port on a Public-Private-Partnership basis.

So they can counter China. This is the same airport SL forced us to take over to change the loan to equity, instead we took over Ham. Port. Actually under proper Chinese management, I believe Hambantota can be a success.

The name of Hambantota translate into Chinese 汉班托塔, 汉(中国) 班(掌管,调度之意),托塔 (佛教礼制, 斯里兰卡为佛国), 冥冥之中自有天意啊。天选之地,岂不大兴乎? :enjoy:

SL is no longer the land lord, china is :P

SL government owns the port and the port is managed by a Joint Venture. Although China owns majority of the Venture it is bound by terms of the agreement and SL laws.

They can counter china by a simple law passed in parliament. So its not the question of "can" but "will".

Maybe you can run Ham. port well, maybe not. Time will tell.

SL government owns the port and the port is managed by a Joint Venture. Although China owns majority of the Venture it is bound by terms of the agreement and SL laws.

SL govt. owns 30% and the entire Management is in the hands of the Chinese. I am going to bet they will bring in chinese employees too, from key positions in the management to workers.

Its true, they are bound by SL laws, but SL too is bound by international Laws and terms of agreement.

Of course, SL is a sovereign country. They will do what is best for them. That's why all ports are commercial and military in nature. It's a long game. :enjoy:

india shud have helped sri lanka by paying chinese debt for this port. Anyway, we have airport on lease.
Its all for sri lanka and for how long they will tolerate chinese and their demands.
