HAL To Unveil 'Indian' FGFA Model At Aero India

A model of the modified Indian version of the Russian T-50 fifth generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) will be on display for the first time at Aero India 2013, starting on February 6. The picture on the left is from September last year -- a 1:15.5 model of a modified single-seater FGFA by HAL. It is likely that the same model will be on display at the show, though this isn't certain. Here's HAL's full press release on what they've got on display at Aero India this year:

[HAL’s] strength in design, development and production will be showcased through its products during the up-coming Aero-India 2013. The major attractions of the HAL’s pavilion include in-house designs such as Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), “Rudra” the weaponised Advance Light Helicopter (ALH) and Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT). “For the first time, we will present to the world glimpses of prospective multirole fighter (PMF) also known as Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA). This is under co-development with the Russians”, says Dr. R.K. Tyagi, Chairman, HAL.

ALH Dhruv, LCH and Rudra (Mk 4 WSI) will be on flying display. Scale models of Light Utility Helicopter, Hawk, Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) and Su-30 will also be on display. In addition, Pilotless Target Aircraft (Lakshya), Shakti engine, state-of-the-art accessories and avionics from various divisions of HAL are being showcased.

The other specialities of the HAL pavilion include 3D video mapping of HTT-40, Dornier Glass cockpit, scale models of aerospace structures of GSLV MkII, GSLV Mk III and PSLV. The Rotary Wing Corner will provide the visitors through simulation & visual display, a helicopter view of the technologies, the capabilities and competencies built in the company. There will also be a holographic projection depicting capabilities of LCA, Hawk, LCH and LUH.

Any idea what will be visible difference between FGFA and PAK FA ???

The main difference will be that FGFA will be twin seater whereas PAK FA will be single seater.

This means bigger cockpits for FGFA so expect a LITTLE BIT more RCS for FGFA.

IIRC , IAF abandoned the requirement of a second seat.


In an interview to India Strategic magazine, IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal N.A.K. Browne has said that all 144 of these will be single-seater aircraft (which explains the modified single-seat wind-tunnel model unveiled recently by HAL).

But that doesn't make sense? That just totally negates the whole point of FGFA? Unless they're looking to install French/Israeli avionics and electrical systems like they did with Mki?

But I look how India has finally got round its' addiction with twin seaters.

Two seaters were required to distribute the workload since many of the calculations have to taken manually. But with the increasing sophistication of avionics I think the mission computer can do many of the jobs that was previously required to be done by either the pilot or wso and hence one seater would be fine. It also saves on logistics, pilot training etc.
