Hello everyone, I'm George. First found this forum years ago. Been lurking for a while and finally decided to register. I'm an avid history buff and also interested in subjects like military tech, space technology and exploration, polemology and international affairs. I don't care much about nationalism, but I'm a big fan of sober strategic analysis and Real Politik.

I've worked all my life in the health-care industry in various positions, and I'm currently employed as a security manager in a private health-care conglomerate here.

In my opinion, FYROM should be allowed to call itself Macedonia and celebrate Alexander of Macedon as their hero, just as much as the Greeks should.

Let's start this off with some controversy:

In my opinion, FYROM should be allowed to call itself Macedonia and celebrate Alexander of Macedon as their hero, just as much as the Greeks should.

Personally, I don't see much controversy in this situation.


1. What we now call Macedonia as a region includes lands in four different countries. People born in said regions are objectively Macedonians, regardless of ethnicity and/or national identity.

2. Any and every sovereign state/nation has a priori the fundamental right to self-determination.

3. Ancient Macedon is...ancient history.

4. Nation states build a national identity as a means to both consolidate their population and align their citizens with the deemed national interest, whatever that may be. According to this aspect of Nation building, the appropriation of history as a consolidation tool is a very useful weapon. Every country does it.

Therefore, the exclusivity of history is simply a national consolidation aspect of domestic policy, and a weapon to promote foreign policy interests. I personally think that the right of self-determination comes first, so I have no problem with my neighbors celebrating Alexander the Great. Especially since celebrating him and wanting to be like him or be his descendant is something that I feel myself too.

I would like to visit Greece some day in the future I hope nationalism and fascists dont succeed in spreading their ideas around Europe and i also pray that intolerance for other religious minorities and groups in our country Pakistan vanishes
