What's new

Greetings from Athens

. .
,and salutations from Sunny Greece!

Hello everyone, I'm George. First found this forum years ago. Been lurking for a while and finally decided to register. I'm an avid history buff and also interested in subjects like military tech, space technology and exploration, polemology and international affairs. I don't care much about nationalism, but I'm a big fan of sober strategic analysis and Real Politik.

I've worked all my life in the health-care industry in various positions, and I'm currently employed as a security manager in a private health-care conglomerate here.

Anyway, thanks for the community, and see you in the forums. Cheers..C:
Hello George. Welcome on aboard. We gave you a good thrashing when we met you guys in battle and almost took down your boss. But that is all in the past. Best friends forever now?

I was worried that you'd be easy meat
for our Turkish colleagues; I'm reassured.

Welcome, keep the mind/body armour on
and best of luck, Tay.
Same... I saw Two Greek Flags... I "silently" though... "Steak Haché incoming"...
Seems the Boy is well built...

Everyone, many thanks for the warm welcome!

I would like to visit Greece some day in the future I hope nationalism and fascists dont succeed in spreading their ideas around Europe and i also pray that intolerance for other religious minorities and groups in our country Pakistan vanishes :)

This is indeed something worth hoping and praying for. Because "when Europe goes far-right, they go far right through Belgium!"

Posts like these should not be included in welcome threads. It doesn't matter if it's int he past or not. He alreayd wrote he does not care about nationalism so this post is unwarranted.

Hehe...no worries about that really. Predisposition to online squabbles depends on a lack of character hardening against the medium at hand as well as an automatic personalization of bias/harm against a contrarian position. Being around the medium since the time of CBBSs/Newsgroups helps in identifying and rectifying this problem at its birth.

I cannot post links yet as a member, if I could I'd share an old Australian comedy skit about the general concept. It was called "harden (the f---) up!" XD

Yasu George.

Welcome. Been to Athena 8 times. Love your city and lot of friends there.

Hello! Although I know little about South Africa (aside from military tech and the history of the anti-apartheid movement), it is on my sights as a place to visit soon. A close friend is an oenologist who will be in SA next year to work before the harvest, so I might be able to visit him and see the Table Bay for myself..C:

Here in Greece, schoolbooks teach the young about Alexander facing his fiercest opposition in that region, and gaining a friend in Porus after the battle of the Hydaspes which was also the most costly battle fought by the Macedonians.

All that is indeed in the past.

i would like to know what is the perception about Pakistanis in general in Greeks?? i hav watched a news about a month ago where Pakistanis were attacked by far rights in Athens . ( I know that it was kind of stupidity on part of Pakistanis as they were celebrating a religious day or carrying religious procession without security clearance in a non muslim country )

The Far Right in Greece is mostly re-presented here by the Golden Dawn party. It is a neo-nazi, fascist ultranationalist organization, complete with Nazi symbolism and frequent attacks against both domestic (left leaning) and foreign (immigrants) "enemies". While historically standing in the fringes of both the political spectrum and public support here in Greece, the lethal combination of a severe protracted economic crisis and the unsolved problem of illegal (or deemed as such) immigration here has unfortunately made its ranks soar.

Said factors inform the general population predisposition to (and perception of) immigrants, especially Muslims. Thus, there is a constant move towards social conservatism in these matters, exacerbating the problem. Pakistanis are not spared from this.

This is everywhere and i dont get it how one can succeed if immigration stops??? do you see far rights succeeding in future in Europe or it is a phase that will pass with time lets say in next 5yrs???

My personal view is that things are both scary and volatile now. From a historic perspective, ultra-nationalism thrives when social cohesion weakens. Europe has passed a number of major crises in that regard in the last 300 years, and each seems to be more violent and turbulent than the last one.

The EU project was - partly - designed to deal with this issue via true political unification but as you know it has been (for various reasons) transformed and perverted into an economic conglomerate that tries to fit every foot in Europe on the same, solitary shoe.

I'm not very optimistic personally for the midterm, since the underlying factors that fuel this fire are both present and expanding.
