Green Card Soldiers

James Gooder - Al Jazeera English - AJE Aug 31, 2003

Nearly 40,000 of America's frontline soldiers are not US citizens.

Many of the troops on duty in Iraq do not count English as their first language and would prefer to take orders in their native tongue ... usually Spanish.

The revelation has prompted British MP George Galloway, one of the fiercest critics of the invasion of Iraq, to accuse the US of using its "green card" troops as cannon fodder.

Galloway went on to attack the US policy of putting its poor minorities and non-citizens in the frontline of its foreign wars.

In an exclusive interview he told Aljazeera.net that it was part of a long US tradition of using its underclass as cannon fodder.

The statistics, buried by White House spin doctors, reveal that a significant minority of troops fighting under the US banner are not in fact US citizens but residents hoping to speed up their citizenship.

Galloway said that this was typical of a government used to having the marginalised fight its battles.

"Nothing has changed since that last failed attempt to invade and determine the future of another country, Vietnam," he told Aljazeera.net from his holiday villa in Portugal.

"The proportion of blacks in the army was 40%, while in the US population the number of blacks was a quarter of that," he said

"Of course the underclass has now become increasingly more Hispanic than black."

Disproportionate casualties

This explains why a disproportionate number of the so-called US casualties in the invasion and occupation of Iraq have borne Latino names.

Galloway says that on a weekly Atlanta radio show in which he participates, the callers have repeatedly claimed that Blacks and Hispanics are the fodder army recruiters are after.

The Pentagon says that there are 37,401 non-US citizens on active duty, and that joining up has a special incentive for them - an American passport.

"The military services have processes and programmes in place to help service members expedite their citizenship," says a US Department of Defence spokesperson.
"The estimated time for the application is about six months."

Citizenship has been especially hard to come by due to the draconian immigration rules imposed by the US Department of Homeland Security since the 11 September 2001 attacks.

It can take several years to gain citizenship, for those lucky enough to get it. Signing up to the army can speed this up, provided the GI comes home alive.

Promises

Other incentives under the Montgomery GI Bill include the promises of a college fund of up to $50,000, post service employment and training.

But activist Carlos Mendes of the Latinos Against the War in Iraq coalition says that many soldiers have told him that these promises often fail to materialise.

The US military relies on volunteers, the Pentagon argues, and there is no official draft, therefore no pressure on anyone to sign up.

Yet in a country where further education is prohibitively expensive, and medical care privatised, these incentives deliberately target America's poor minorities, as well as those desperate for citizenship, freeing the sons and daughters of those with money and influence from service.

"The people who made the decisions never sent their sons to get hot, bloody and dirty on the battlefield," he said.

Even when there was a draft, the decision-makers stayed out of trouble. "The white sons of the rulers of America, including a certain George W Bush, have always found ways around the draft, in his case through his bogus service in the air auxiliary, while Dick Cheney took one course after another at university," he said.

Outspoken critic

Galloway, the Glasgow Kelvin MP who has consistently criticised US and British policy on Iraq, famously called Bush and Blair "wolves" over their war-like rhetoric leading up to the invasion.

He opposed UN sanctions imposed after the last Gulf War complaining that they inflicted huge suffering on ordinary Iraqis.

Mr Galloway has visited Iraq on numerous occasions and met the country's former president and major figures in the Baathist government.

But he was also a vigorous campaigner during the Thatcher years, picketing the Iraqi embassy in London, when the Conservative government supplied arms to Saddam Hussein.

The Truth Seeker - Green Card Soldiers

Are they using these green card soldiers in Afghanistan also :woot:

.
A couple of years there where allegations that the US army had killed a load of people and buried them in a mass grave in iraq ,on further investigation it turned out to be non US citizen soldiers.
They did not appear on any list of US soldiers killed as officially they are not US citizens-passport holders ect.

Yeah, right! Totally libelous. How about a bonafide reference to back up this incredible, vicious statement.

And then what....your gonna suddenly change your opinion of the US govt and call them for what they are.
The proof will have to come from some US news agency otherwise its propaganda and you really thing the US is gong to admit anything wrong.

.
This thing has already been shown on the TV and advertised in the magzines. i'll try to get one here!
It is quite an old story, perhaps a couple of years back!

The program was shown on Nat Geo.
And the Advertisement in the mag said that, join the US military and get a green card. You can be from any nationality but you will have to serve in Iraq or Afghanistan for atleast 3 years and would never be enployed 'inside' USA. Thereafter these soldiers would be free to leave or continue to serve the military but as they would be given the US citizenship.

So truth seeker i am really surprised that you don't know anything about this!!!

This is another thing that shows that the american people are kept away from the facts, why would the american people be shown these ads as they were not at all directed towards the american public; common sense i would say!

US Army Lures Foreigners with Promise of Citizenship
.......Since Sept. 11, 2001, the United States has granted US citizenship to 32,500 foreign soldiers. In July 2002, US President George W. Bush issued an executive order to expand existing legislation to offer a fast track to citizenship to foreigners who agree to fight for the US Armed Forces. About 8,000 non-Americans have joined the US military every year since then.

The foreigners already represent 5 percent of all recruits. They even make up the majority of soldiers from some New York and Los Angeles neighborhoods. Four years and 3,800 US deaths after the beginning of the Iraq campaign, fewer and fewer American citizens are willing to fight in a war opposed by a majority of the US population. But despite the Iraq war's lack of popularity, US generals are demanding 180,000 new recruits a year.......

I'm not talking about green card soldiers. The US has offered accelerated citizenship to immigrants who joined the armed services since at least the Korean War. Also they qualify for "GI education" benefits to go to college. What I think is libelous is the BS about "mass graves" of undocumented, immigrant US soldiers ANYWHERE, let alone Iraq. Don't you all realize that NOTHING is secret in the US for long! Such a thing could NEVER be covered up from our press, especially since such a story would have decimated Bush!

What about this:
The War on Terror -- Terrorism of War: Current Wars: Iraq

.....Yet no one has admitted or announced the true fate of the dead American solders....

I can't make heads or tales of that website's info, enigma947. It looks like parroted propaganda from the jihadis and their internet allies. My Washington Post publishes a picture of each and every US soldier killed in Iraq. There have been thousands of them since 2003. Do you really believe a cover-up of unannounced, dead American soldiers in Iraq has escaped our press? Do you really believe that? Do you realize how devastating that would have been for the Bush administration? 10 times worse than abu Graib. There is no way our liberal "Democratic Party" press would have missed that. I have full confidence that they have published every possible derogatory story about Iraq that exists.

Gotta admit it's pretty funny stuff.

Not that I'd reference it to make a point but...

A videotape produced and distributed by the “Majles Shora Al-Mojahideen in Fallujah,” one of the most important military wings of the Iraqi resistance, showed a burial site discovered outside the Iraqi city of Samara with tens of bodies in US military body bags. The dead were dressed in US uniforms.

I actually watched the video-pics thinking it was going to be a iraqi mass grave only to see what looked like dead US soldiers.

Go follow the story....google it.

Is this the same liberal "Democratic Party" press you talk about that was totally anti iraq war and exposed the lies of bush..?

Hi Pakistani colleagues,

You didn't complain when the u s was offering green cards to doctors--nurses ---engrs---IT techs etc etc etc---from pakistan india and hundred other countries----so why is it a big deal to fill up another job by offering green cards to people who join armed forces---

To the guy about mass graves about u s soldiers----the u s milltary doesnot make mass graves to bury its soldiers who have died on the battle front---regardless of who they are----green card soldiers or citizens of the state---.

If your belief and understanding of the issue is so shallow---then your words don't mean anything. Could you please have some better understanding of the people and nations that you deal with.

Joe Biden's son is a serving member of armed forces in IRAQ---

Where is Qazi Hussein Ahmed's son---hiding under daddy's skirt.

.
Fair enough - think of it as a test of loyalty towards your adopted country.

.
McCain's youngest boy too. Dropped out of high school to join the Marines as a rifleman and has served a tour in Iraq.

Never too proud to accept help from around the globe to defend our values. Been doing so since Von Steuben and Lafayette showed up in our Revolutionary War. Whole brigades of Germans and Irish who fought for the north during our civil war.

These folks must still meet the same standards as any applicant and have rendered invaluable service to our nation. A green card while serving (NO three year tours in IRAQ- a three year enlistment is the obligation) and the chance at accelerated path to citizenship isn't too much to ask for service honorably performed.

U.S. Army and U.S.M.C. exceeded their recruiting goals for 2008.
