Govt plans Greyhound-like force in 4 states
Learning from the success of Greyhounds, a special police unit in Andhra Pradesh, the Centre has approved funds to raise specialised forces in four Naxal-hit states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Orissa.
The special units will be trained in guerilla warfare and will be assisted by other Central forces during operations against the rebels. The four states will get funds to create and upgrade infrastructure, weaponry and equipment.
The proposed outlay during the 12th Plan in this regard is Rs 280 crore by the Central government and Rs 56 crore by the state government concerned, the Union Home Ministry said in its proposal. The funding will be done under the MHA-sponsored scheme for special infrastructure.
The Centre has, however, put certain riders before funds are released. The special force of the state has to be upgraded as per the approved guidelines of Greyhounds. Even if a special force has been raised in some form in the state, it will be reoriented through the process mentioned in the guidelines. The state will adhere to the guidelines. Only states that give such an undertaking will be considered for funding, said an official.
