Featured Govt moves amendment bill in NA: Ridiculing armed forces, personnel to be a crime

.
I have never witnessed Tort laws ever implemented in Pakistan. If you observe our history of electronic or print media along with Politicians and their "political tactics"...they have survived by making slanderous/libelous accusations on Live TV without having any fear of accountability. Our judicial system has reached to such low levels where Lahore or Islamabad High Courts cannot implement their own decisions despite giving strong observations thrice or more, and Veteran lawyers are able to delay case proceedings for years without any moral or ethical sense of responsibility.. Point is that defamatory cases have usually not given priority in such hopeless situation.

We should make laws for speedy proceedings for such cases, "Pantees Punctures Case", is not decided yet even after 8 years, despite the accused admitted on TV that it was a "Siasi Biyan" (Political Statement) and had no truth.

Bullshitt. What the hell is going on? They have captured almost every institution by inserting some general in it and now this.

One of the members informed us that Army will continue to perform the civic duties (by heading civic agencies) but wont listen the criticism for unsatisfactory performance of that civic agency.

Important thing is timing of the bill ,Already BAJCO leaks and Army is under pressure over IK beautiful governance .So is it a case where PTI is trying to bring Army further into dirt ? As when ever there is a criticism on IK he says Fouj aur main ek page per hain .Absolutely disgusting to see such bill ,As Armed personnel are already respectful and there sacrfices are too much for nation on top of that this new propaganda bill .

I am all for introducing such laws to protect institutions but we should also make sure to not make them sacred cows. We should make sure by making them untouchables we are not destroying our defense forces. A law should be made to punish people who make accusations without proof. Those sold out journos and self proclaimed analysts who bark at our forces without proof need to be prosecuted. We should also provides space where genuine scandals dont get buried.

I have supported this Government and Armed Forces on every forum i have been able to do so but not this time. This is completely against the Freedom of Expression and can be in no way justified. The Armed forces have many elements who are as corrupt as politicians. Just like our Politicians their Lifestyles do not match their Incomes. And we as citizens of this country have every right to question them as we do our Politicians and bureaucrats. We already have one Sacred Cow we dont need another one. There are already existing laws against false accusation take them to the Court. And to those who are Blindly supporting this Continue on this Course and you might find yourself in a Police State soon Enough.

It is a private member bill but has full support by the government. It was not presented on the which is called private members day, it was not agenda of NA, it was presented by bulldozing all the rules and regulations.

If it had full support of government a minister would have presented it and it would have been passed.

It is essentially the end of any accountability in Pakistan - so long as there are holy cows.

More importantly - not sure about you @Jungibaaz , but in case this really goes through I will be done with Pakistani Armed forces discussions and Pakistan in general.

I'm personally too attached to let either go, but surely even justified dissidence is often a thankless task.

Folks just start posting after reading the thread title and hardly do any research by themselves.

This is a private member's bill, not backed by the government and has no chance of passing from either house.

Request all members to first get all the facts then form an opinion. Some just need an excuse to bash army and government.

It isn’t about bashing army or government but preventing such ideas of creating holy cows. Whether it passes or not isn’t the question, but that such idiots who support ideas that equate state or government institutions to prophets is the dangerous bit.
It is this lack of criticism that imbibes corrupt people and processes.

It is never easy to let go of deep attachments to the homeland, but almost everyone realizes when the time has come to move on, while keeping nostalgia alive to keep the tether unbroken. As the next generations settle in, a day when such tethers are broken comes too, inevitably.

Chances are we will continue to see further deterioration in almost all aspects of civilized society with the backbone middle class having four stark choices that I have mentioned before as well: Move up and join the elites by whatever means available, sink down in the deprived class despite all effort, move out if any opportunity presents itself, or just accept things the way they are as the system serves itself, and itself alone. Given such choices, who will have time think about esoteric concepts like real accountability?

Having said the above, I will also mention that at least the need for accountability in the armed forces is far far lower than the other institutions, still. For how long this lasts remains to be seen. I still remember when General Zia open the floodgates that gave hitherto unmatched opportunities for corruption for senior military ranks, in particular the interview given to foreign media by General Fazle Haq sitting in the lush grounds of the (then) NWFP Governor's mansion, so I am not at all surprised by developments such as being discussed in this thread.

You have to gauge public opinion in some cases, first you leak something about the thing you want to do. If this gets public appreciation, you own this, if you get public anger you distance yourself from it.
