Pakistan’s Karachi-based ethnic party, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has proved yet again that it can paralyze Karachi, Pakistan’s largest port city and business hub. It had asked Karachiites to shut down the city and suspend all business activities on Friday to mourn the death of its activists. This has become a routine that whenever MQM is out of power, it flexes its muscles and either shuts down the city for the whole day or go on rampage leading to increase in the incidents of target killing.
The “Day of Mourning” for Friday was observed to protest against the death of its activist, Muhammad Asif who went missing nearly two months ago and whose dead body was in Landhi area of Karachi on Thursday. The party had earlier called for a day of mourning on June 6, 2013 after three of its workers were kidnapped and killed by unidentified men.
MQM is believed to the largest political party of Karachi having militant wing. It is capable to order killing of any person in Karachi on the orders of its leader who remote-controls the party from London. Its assassinations are coordinated from an unnamed location in South Africa. The targets range from estranged leaders and workers to the journalists who have access to sensitive information of party’s ring of assassination. The media is so scared of the party that it either does not highlight the criminal activities of the party or only attributes the crimes to “unknown” elements.
MQM has been a coalition partner of nearly every government who is forced to take it into its fold to keep Karachi peaceful. Shutting down the city of the call of the party for a single day translates into a loss of tens of billions to the economy.
The government of PML (N) had sacked the party’s ministers in 1998 when there was an evidence that a high-respected social figure and philanthropist, Hakim Saeed, was killed by MQM’s assassins for his refusal to pay up extortion money to the party. The people of Karachi are expecting the present government will move against the deadly assassins a la 1998 by sacking the provincial government for failing to maintain law and order and appoint a governor to directly rule the province.
The continued killing spree and intermittent strike calls to paralyze the city have raised serious questions about the capacity of the provincial government of Zardari’s PPP who was a major ally of MQM during the last five years. If the city does not come back to the fold of law, the government of Nawaz Sharif will have to take difficult decisions about MQM and Karachi.

Another day of mourning in Karachi leaves behind serious questions

I agree with the poster. These MQM tactics are t oshow to the govt what they can do it if it does not accept its unjust demands. The quid pro quo here will be to accept MQM into govt. and in return there will be no strike calls and MQM kalay kartoot will continue, ie target killing and other type of badmaashi while govt will have to stay quiet on this.

Then do it , how many more deaths do you need to carry out the ' necessary steps ' to ensure peace in the largest city of Pakistan which generates more than 70% of revenue ? Get the army in here , if the handicapped Govt of Sindh cant control things ! Karachi used to be peaceful and developing during General Musharraf's rule and today , it has become more or less a Beirut !

Give Karachi to Army .. & give them Free hand ... for just 3 days .. after that all the Saffron terrorists will either be dead .. or will be sitting next to their Handler in U&K.

Any of the party can can shut the city at will but MQM due to it it influence in more areas of city can do it more effectively. Anyways it was friday and the shops were also scheduled to open after Jumma Prayer.

why you people dont let Karachi to be ruled by the Karachites as Lahore is. Why you always try to capture it. If you want to then share the agony of common people and win their hearts. All the major parties have abandoned it and its people and after forming a govt. try to snatch it as a prize. why. Look at the PMLN. they dont have much Urdu speaking people in Pmln in Karachi. their support is ethnicity based. Look at the PPPP their vote bank is also sindhi speaking people in karachi. All the major parties dont have much vote bank in urdu speaking majority of karachi. Look at the MQM, they have Ashfaq Mangi MPA ( a sindhi ) from Karachi. Nabeel gabool and slaman mujahid balcoh MNAs (Baloch ) from Karachi. Waqar hussain shah MPA( hazara ) from Karachi. Heer soho MNA( sindhi) from Karachi. Tahira Asif MNA of Lahore from Karachi's reserve seats. why dont other parties can do the same to win the hearts of karachi.

Unfortunately local bodies don’t exist in Lahore same as in case of Karachi, so Lahore is also not ruled by Lahories. If you Say Mian Sahibhan are Punjabis then sorry, they actually represent a class which is one all over the country, irrespective they speak Urdu, Punjabi, Pushto, Sindhi, Balochi or Saraiki, they all are one in purpose and deed.
The only difference between Lahore and Karachi is that Lahore walas get Proclaimed or alleged offender killed through police for their own interest and Karach walas kill police officers . Have a look

Agreed, after all, people always vote MQM, and Punjabis can't stand that, they need to have a Punjabi rule

might i remind you that it was musharraf who armed and strengthened MQM, after it was weakened by govts. of benazir and nawaz, which is signified by the fact that MQM lost its seats to mullah alliance in early 2000s parliamentary elections. but musharraf in his superior wisdom chose to brath new life into this monster(12 may incident shows this clearly)
