I must start by saying that even though coming from a fauji background, I have no antipathy for the Chinese, nor have I ever seen any reason to keep bashing them. If anything, in quite a lot of things, I am an admirer.

Today morning's newspaper gave me one more cause to take my hat off to them. Not that its an uncommon occurrence in our own country. But to see it happening in a country which more often than not gets deride as being an autocratic state of brain dead party line toeing silently nodding and unquestioning automatons, this does come as a bit of a rebuff.

It would be so easy for the CCP (?) to just bulldoze its way through. Look at the elaborate measures they've taken when such was not possible or not desirable.

To our Chinese friends here, what's the inside story? Political connections? Media scrutiny from the West? Some special group angle?

In India there is usualy a religious angle or twist to it. More often than not, minority linked.

Seems this "nail house" phenomenon is common, so it must be something more overarching.

Unlike in India, Chinese political workers(especially those belong to the lower strata) are not filthy rich with black-money......they have death-sentence for corruption you know!....but the power/clout is same I guess.

Just one family lives in this building. The rest already made deal and left. This family wished much larger compensation. Once the road was built, the contractor left, and the family now seeks to renegotiate. But contractor has little incentive because the home is not an obstacle to its construction except being an eye sore.

There is an ongoing battle against graft as well as an international campaign to hunt corrupt officials. I guess already hundreds have been brought back home and whatever remaining, the money has been seized.

Certain progress been made, but lots of progress is still to be made.

China nets another 19,000 officials in frugality campaign

The Communist Party of China (CPC)'s top anti-graft body said Wednesday some 19,000 officials were reprimanded for violating austerity rules in the first half of 2015, bringing the total number of those punished since late 2012 to more than 120,000.

Those punished in the first six months of this year were involved in 14,000 cases, the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) said in a report posted on its website.

The figures represent a significant drop from last year, when more than 71,000 officials were reprimanded in more than 53,000 cases, signaling that the "eight-point rules" introduced on Dec. 4, 2012 aimed at reducing bureaucracy, extravagance, and undesirable work habits may be taking effect.

The CCDI warned that the number of violations and officials involved has been on the rise since March.

In June alone, more than 4,300 officials were reprimanded in more than 3,100 cases, it said.

Violations include using work vehicles for personal errands, providing unauthorized subsidies, and holding extravagant receptions, weddings and funerals.
