Ghazal concert in aid of Kashmiri cultural centre
MUMBAI: The Kashmiri Pandits' Association of Mumbai that "works to preserve and propagate" the rich cultural heritage of Jammu & Kashmir is organising a musical concert by singer Pankaj Udhas to raise funds.
The organisation says that over the last 40 years, it has undertaken social campaigns in and around Mumbai. Its current project is the construction of a community centre named Sharda Sadan at Kharghar in the satellite town of Navi Mumbai.
The project has been stalled owing to financial constraints. Ambitiously therefore, the Sadan aims to initiate various social tasks including educational scholarships, medical relief camps and financial grants, a home for the aged and diagnostic facilities for poor people.
The cultural focus is yet to be enunciated. "Forgotten, forsaken and forbidden to call the land of their ancestors home, the displacement of the Kashmiri Pandit community is one of the greatest tragedies seen in post-Independence India. The focus now is on helping the community consolidate and work towards conserving its rich heritage," the association says. The ghazal concert will be held March 2 in Bandra.
