ISLAMABAD: At a time when India is desperately trying to discredit Pakistan’s counterterrorism gains, Britain’s top military commander travelled to North Waziristan Agency on Wednesday where he praised the Pakistan Army for cleansing the once terrorist-infested tribal region.

“I think it is to the huge credit of the Pakistan Army that you have managed to clear and [are] so far holding this area,” said General Sir Nicholas Patrick Carter, Chief of General Staff of the UK Army, during an unprecedented visit by the military chief of a key western country.

“It is a great privilege for me as the head of the British army to come to Miramshah, the administrative headquarters of North Waziristan. I’ve heard so much about this place and I’ve heard so much about what the Pakistan Army has been doing in this part of the world,” Gen Carter said.

He added that since he had spent a lot of his time in Afghanistan, he did understand the nature of the task and the problem of the common threat of terrorism. “It is really inspiring how the Pakistan Army is consolidating its gains and bringing peace to this part of the region,” he added.

He also appreciated the way the Pakistan Army had been working for the repatriation of the temporarily displaced persons (TDPs) besides undertaking development projects. “I am looking forward to return of the population,” he added.

Homegrown militants and their foreign cohorts virtually held sway over North Waziristan until mid-June 2014 when the military mounted a massive operation, codenamed Zarb-e-Azb, to drive them out of their stronghold.

The region has since been purged of terrorists, but the operation has been expanded to dismantle the sleeper cells of terrorists in the country’s urban centres.

According to the military’s media wing, the formation commander briefed the British military chief about the prevailing environment in the region, return of the TDPs and development projects undertaken by the army.

Tens of thousands of tribesmen had been evacuated from North Waziristan before troops moved in to drive out terrorists.

Earlier, Gen Carter called on Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif at the GHQ in Rawalpindi, the Inter-Services Public Relations, said in a statement.

Regional security issues and matters of mutual interest were discussed in the meeting. The visiting British general acknowledged the sacrifices and achievements of the Pakistan Army in the fight against terrorism and efforts for bringing peace and stability in the region.

Gen Carter laid a floral wreath at Yadgar-e-Shuhada (monument of the martyrs). A smartly turned out contingent of the Pakistan Army presented the guard of honour to the visiting general, the ISPR said.

Yes in fact in Karachi MI6 has more resources than CIA. Yes MI6 wants to get rid of Altaf but due to Indian pressure they can't. That is why case against Altaf was dropped because if case would have been presented in court they would also have to give evidence of RAW funding coming to Altaf which would have been big issue.

RAW is the third party in this. MI6 is the host to Altaf Hussain and his goons. MI6 is certainly between the rock and hard place with MQM because if case goes to court, their own partnership with Indian RAW will come out of open as RAW will spill the beans. Some hard questions needs to be asked. What was/is the purpose of MI6 to support Altaf Hussain and MQM? Terrorism in the financial capital of Pakistan? And how the situation is any different or worse when Pakistan to this day is loathed for hosting OBL? Looking at bigger picture, MQM related terrorism which spans more then two decades put to shame the likes of OBL.

OR, we should all live with it, accepting that statecraft is a dirty business and from now on, no one will moan about using terrorism as a tool to further state agenda.

Pakistan will have to Designated Altaf Hussain as a Terrorist. and After that UK will be accused for harboring terrorists in her Soil. and in that Scenario UK will have to arrest or deport Altaf hussain whether they like it or not..

MQM has already distance himself from AH and London management. there won't be any blow back.

According to the journalist Haroon Rashid the plan of SIS or MI6 was to separate the coast of Pakistan away!! Maybe that is no longer plausable. But that is what he mentioned many times.

That is same as saying, to use terrorism causing civilians killings of sovereign country to cause mayhem and eventual dismemberment of the country. This a an act of war. MI6 needs to clean the mess that it has created itself as this MQM issue got all potential to cause irreparable damage between the relations of two countries.

British have had a hard time engaging tribals of Frontier area in the 1800's and 1900's. The head of British Army is bamboozled how PA has achieved this task and he mentions explicitly "so far hold this area " at 0:23, emphasis on "so far".

May be reason by that they and the US used to clear areas in Afghanistan and after a short while would loose it again to the militants and we have so far not let that happen.

yes it is. it can be viewed in two ways they need people to carryout their agenda and they got the squealing swine who sits in London and causes mayhem in Karachi. secondly when our politicians and even military used this threat to gain political clout in Karachi which lead to urban chaos. opportunity vs need but the swine is a spent force hopefully.
