What's new

GE wins $2.6 billion order to supply 1,000 diesel locomotives to Indian Railways

1000 Engines is a huge Order....

But i thought India made locomotives herself?
what happened to that?

These Engines are more powerful than what we make
6000 HP vs 4500 HP
Another factor is speed
Indian Engines can pull a train at 120-130 Kms per hr,
These will do at 160-180 km per hr
They will reduce commute time between important routes by 30%

@anant_s the HHP trains for the WDFC will be rated at 9000HP but for the EDFC will be 12000HP, what is the explicit reason for the Western freight corridor getting trains 25% less powerful?

Here is what GE is supplying

AC 6000CW model
4500 HP

ES 44AC model (rated at 4400 HP).

For Electric locomotive project, 2 locomotives are proposed
1. 12000 HP Bo-Bo+Bo-Bo (8 axle coupled loco units), for which ALSTOM Prima 2 has reportedly won the competition (Unit cost around INR 27 Crore). The locomotives are for Eastern DFC (Ludhiana Dankuni Section)

2. 9000 HP Co-Co (6 axle) locomotives for Western DFC (JNPT Mumbai to Dadri). For this locomotive Japanese consortium of Hitachi, Kawasaki has won the tender. 200 locos will be produced under this project.

The locomotive is similar to Chinese HxD 3 class locomotive.

12000 HP Locomotives for Indian Railways

Will the Japanese manufacture them here ?

Simple reason Eastern Indians & UP walas like to ride on top of trains,so in a way this extra 25% capacity is to carry those people :partay:

The Locomotives to be supplied are as under

Diesel Engines:

1. 700 nos. of 4400 hp GE Evolution Series 12 Cylinder Model ( Tier 4 Emission Compatible )
2. 300 nos. of 6000 hp GE Evolution Series 16 Cylinder Model ( Tier 3 Emission Compatible )

These Locos are 70 percent less polluting than Currently Run Alcos by IR and 30 percent less than the EMD's like WDG4.

Electric Engines

1. 800 nos of Prima 2 ( double unit configuration ) locos , i.e basically 2 locos 6000 hp each attached to each other in Bo-Bo + Bo-Bo configuration . These will be eight axle locos. To be run on eastern corridor.

There is also a single unit version of Prima 2 loco that is rated at 12900 hp with 6 axles in Co-Co , which india has not ordered.

2. 200 nos of 9000 hp engines to be delivered by Kawasaki Heavy Industries. 40 will be imported , 30 delivered in semi knocked down and another 30 in completely knocjed down kits. Rest 100 will be manufactured in india.
These are sourced from japan as a pre requirement funding condition from japan that India will use use its locomotives for Western DFC and also due the fact that these locomotives will have to suit higher pantograph reach as trains on western DFC will be double stacked containers unlike the ones on Eastern routes.
