Well that is the beauty of partition, everyone thinks they lost out. The fact is before partition, the population was pretty homogeneous throughout the subcontinent, so it was hard to draw lines based on religious percentages. The lines were drawn based on census taken by the British, and all parties feel they got less than they deserved.

Kolkata was never Muslim majority, so it makes sense it went to India. The final struggle between Muslim League and Congress was that they both wanted Kolkata and Lahore in their respective countries. Ideally both should have gone to India because Sikhs were majority in Lahore and Hindus were majority in Kolkata. But then Pakistan would get no major city because cities like Karachi and Dhaka were not major cities back then. So as a compromise, Pakistanis got Lahore.

What Mahatma Gandhi was or was not, do not matter now. Only thing that matter is his good deeds exceeds his bad deal by a mile. No human is perfect and so Gandhi was not. However he was a great soul of his time who was able to make himself as a leader of the Indian sub-continent beyond the religious boundaries. Because of his good characters he is still respected throughout the world, and to us that makes us proud to be born in a country where such soul was born.

Gandhi was a good politician, with his heart at right place. The problem is some people almost worship him as deity, where as some others go to the other extreme.

Gandhi G was Great leader.He led independence and inspired movements for non-violence, civil rights and freedom across the world. Sadly He was assassinated on 30 January 1948 by a Hindu nationalist who thought Gandhi was too sympathetic to India's Muslims.

Gandhi was a magician who cast his influence on people. But sorry to say this - when he could not cast his influence, he did not respect people's opinions. Couple of examples - Distancing himself from the Congress after Bose was elected in 1939 and his candidate lost. Supporting Nehru for prime minister though Patel commanded the majority pradesh congress members support. He is a greatman who had his shortcomings - So he is not a mahatma. period.

Do not worry about Indian NE. It is a time bomb planted by the British that will blast in the face of India someday. Even in 1905 the Babu Hindus of Kolkata destroyed an East Begal-Assam Province. It will be redone someday.
