Jianglong Soars After Shipbuilder Develops China's First Methanol-Fueled Vessel

(Yicai Global) July 23 -- Shares of Jianglong Shipbuilding, whose major clients include China's marine law enforcement department, hit the exchange-imposed upper daily limit when trading resumed this afternoon after the company said it had successfully developed China's first methanol-powered vessel.

The Zhuhai-based company's stock price [SHE:300589] gained 10 percent to close at CNY13.28 (USD1.93). The benchmark Shenzhen Component Index rose 0.6 percent.

Jianglong Shipbuilding launched the vessel, for which it owns the indigenous intellectual property rights, this morning in Zhongshan, a city in the south of the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong province, according to a company statement.

It did not elaborate on the technicalities of the ship's power system, but quoted a report from the State Key Laboratory of Engines at Tianjin University. When compared with a same size diesel boat the new vessel cuts carbon oxide emissions 96 percent, hydrocarbon emissions 99 percent, exhaust smoke 54 percent, and boosts cost effectiveness more than 10 percent, it said.

The global ship-building industry and owners have been exploring the use of clean fuels in response to increasingly stringent environment protection laws. In 2016, Waterfront Shipping formed an ocean-going fleet of seven 50,000-ton load vessels, the world's first methanol-fueled ships, made by South Korea's Hyundai Mipo Dockyard and Japan's Minaminippon Shipbuilding.

During its trial production period, Jianglong Shipbuilding filed for a number of invention and utility model patents and formed a key technology research and development design team, the firm said, adding that it will commercialize the vessel based on market demand.

Jianglong Shipbuilding is a leading maker of small- and medium-sized public service and business purpose ships in China. It set up a joint venture with Australia's Austal, the world's largest speed boat maker, in 2016 to develop and build high-end craft with aluminum alloy, according to the firm's website.

WALVIS BAY, Namibia, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's quest to become an international trade hub and gateway advanced further Friday with the official inauguration of the country's 400-million-U.S.-dollar new container terminal in Walvis Bay by the county's President Hage Geingob.

The new container terminal located in the port town of Walvis Bay was constructed on 40 hectares of land reclaimed from the sea by China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd (CHEC) under just five years.

The container handling capacity of the new terminal was increased from the current 350,000 containers to 750,000 per annum.

Speaking to around 1,500 attendants at the terminal, Geingob said that the milestone is yet another indication that country continues to make great strides toward achieving developmental objectives as outlined in the country's Vision 2030 strategic plan.

"Today is a culmination of a long cherished vision of transforming Walvis Bay, from a predominantly fishing harbor inherited at reintegration into Namibia, into an express-hub to international markets," he added.

Speaking on the same occasion, Vice President of CHEC, Li Yi, thanked Namibia for the opportunity to work on the project as contractor and Li believes that the new terminal will contribute to the country's port becoming a great asset and a leading contributor to development.

To highlight the win-win cooperation on the project, Li said over the five years of construction they employed more than 2,000 Namibians and provided on-site training to over 800 local employees who now have attained new skills in the job market.

During the event, CHEC also donated 1 million Namibian dollars (69,000 U.S. dollars) to help assist with the drought currently ravaging the country.

The African Development Bank's Deputy Director General, Josephine Ngure, in statement delivered on her behalf said the new terminal will definitely change the positioning of Namibia and will open up more opportunities to landlocked countries like Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia.

Chinese Ambassador to Namibia, Zhang Yiming, said the completed new container terminal is set to work hand in hand with the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative.

Meanwhile, before the actual commissioning of the new terminal, Namport's new terminal project manager, Elzevir Gelderbloem said from Aug. 17 to 24 the port will shut down for the migration from the old to the new terminal.

He further stated that the old terminal will now be used for multi-purpose for non-containerized cargo.

Polar cruise liner marks shipbuilding breakthrough

Experts say China is stepping up to become a world class shipbuilder after the first China-made polar cruise liner was handed over to a US company on Friday in Haimen, East China's Jiangsu Province, the base of China Merchants Group (CMG).

According to CMG's website, they have taken 10 orders from US vessels management company Sunstone Ships.

After 28 months' building, the first to be launched Friday was named Greg Mortimer.

"It shows the high international recognition of our shipbuilding industry, which is improving very fast," Cheng Juehao, a deputy chief of the Shanghai International Shipping Institute's Cruise Economy Research Center, told the Global Times on Sunday.

The 104-meter-long and 18-meter-wide cruise liner weighs 8,305 metric tons, with 135 cabins for 160 tourists and 95 mariners, Chinese news site yicai.com reported.

The construction of a cruise liner is a difficult task and a polar expedition cruise liner more difficult, Cheng said.

CMG's polar cruise liner represents China's highest level, he said.

According to Cheng, the CMG ship boasts advanced cold-proofing, environmental protection and an enhanced capacity to return safely to harbor in extreme conditions.

In extreme weather and rough oceanic conditions, the cruise liner is able to sail 1,500 nautical miles to ensure people's safety and return to port.

The liner is also outfitted with cold-proof equipment for lifeboat rescue.

The design and construction meet US health requirements in terms of air quality, fresh water quality and food safety, Cheng noted.

The cruise liner is not only a ship but also a milestone in the history of China's shipbuilding industry, which shows China's ambition of competing in the world market, said Claude Maillot, president of French ship inspection firm Bureau Veritas in North Asia.

According to the CMG website, the ship is scheduled to make its 12-day maiden voyage to Antarctica and the tickets have been sold out, with prices ranging from $10,500 to $11,800 per person.

The vessel, made by China State Shipbuilding unit Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group), is the world's first ultra-large container ship with liquefied natural gas as its main power source and it consequently boasts optimal environmental protection performance.

The craft, whose load capacity is nearly 220,000 tons, will be delivered in April.

Liquefied natural gas is cooled into liquid form for ease and safety of non-pressurized storage or transport. It occupies about 1/600th the normal volume of the gas. It is colorless, non-toxic, odorless and non-corrosive.

I don't think this news is accurate.

LNG powered ships are not a novelty, in fact the whole shipping industry is moving towards LNG because it is cleaner.

Frankly don't know what the news is trying to refer.

SHANGHAI, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's shipbuilder Hudong-Zhonghua has named its self-developed 4th generation liquified natural gas (LNG) carrier "Dubhe" at the Changxing shipbuilding yard in Shanghai.

The 174,000-cubic-meter vessel, set to transport LNG from the Yamal project in Russia to China, is the first of its kind among four LNG carriers made by the company.

With the lastest power system and tank devices, the 295-m long Dubhe is 45 m at the beam and can operate at a speed of up to 21 knots.

As one of the major shipbuilding subsidiaries of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited, Hudong-Zhonghua has built China's first LNG carrier and developed 250,000-cubic-meter LNG supertankers, as well as icebreaking ARC7 LNG carriers.

This is not the world first LNG-powered ship. But world's first LNG-powered 23000 TEU container ship. The article title makes this point very clear.

Frankly don't know if the Indian expert on everything has some reading problems.

Yes, and I was asking this question because I remembered reading somewhere that Koreans have switched to LNG powered ships. (Koreans specialize in Ultra Large Container Ships and LNG Carriers and are more than happy to merge their two specialities)

A bit of research and I found this:

They have already delivered these ships which are fitted with LNG equipment or are LNG ready. (Giving companies more flexibility in their operations.)

As such, I congratulate China for its emerging strengths, but AFAIK, it is behind its own goals stated 5 years back when it comes to shipbuilding.

Korea and Japan still dominate the high end ships. (And China is usually forced to give out favors like extremely cheap financing to attract orders at its own yards)
