Japan dominates in high end ships today? What a joke! Today's Japan even does not know how to make a proper bulk carrier or container ship.

Only a person with ZERO knowledge on shipbuilding industry would brag today's Japan shipbuilding industry. This industry in Japan is falling, is dying:
Back to 2015, Japan could still get close to 1/3 of the total world new contracts. Equal to the contracts volume won by China and South Korea.

Dude! Japanese shipyards as you YOURSELF said had a very big presence in high end shipbuilding until even a few years back.

The reason Japanese shipyards have not been able to compete is because Korea has caught up with lower prices (and same or higher standards) and because Korea/China heavily fund/finance/subsidize their shipbuilders.

This doesn't mean that Japanese shipyards have suddenly forgotten making high end ships within the last 4 years.

It is because Japan is costly, and their is not enough support from Japanese Govt. unlike Korea. That is why Japanese shipbuilders themselves are moving into other countries.

And you are quoting data for ships overall.

Try getting order backlog for high end ships. Japan performs very well there as well.

For example, this report is from a year back detailing the past LNG tanker orders.

Japan still got more orders for LNG related vessels than China. These are widely considered the toughest and highest value added ships to make.

Please at this point start looking at yourself. You yourself have little knowledge about the Industry, but have to just pointlessly argue without doing even basic research.

Japan is winning share in high end ships? LNG carrier is the best symbol of high end ships. And the Indian expert on everything is keeping talking about LNG carriers. So he must know this sector in Japan well.

Just shows us some news articles saying Japan in recent three to four years is winning orders on LNG carriers. I mean the large ones (e.g. >100,000 CUM at least). Not small ones. Show us the news. Such big deals are usually announced. If Japan secures any, there should be news.

Thanks god. The Indian expert on everything now at least acknowledges the Korean shipbuilding industry is subsidized/financed by the Korean government too. Just in his previous comment, he still claims it is only China doing that.

The two tables I shared in my last post contains two data sets: DWT and CGT. I bet the Indian Expert on Everything does not know what the two indicators mean. Otherwise he won't dare to brag Japan is doing fantastic in high end ships.

To make it simple, CGT considers the complexity level of a ship, but DWT not. I.e. a low tech ship (e.g. bulker), could have very big DWT, but a much smaller CGT. While a high tech ship (e.g. LNG carrier), its CGT could be very close to DWT. Look at the data Korea, its share in CGT is with no difference to share in DWT. Clearly a sign of "focus on high end ships". But look at the CGT/DWT ratio between China and Japan, almost no difference. Japan is focusing on high end ships, but China on low end? Sorry, the contract data does NOT support it.

This white paper provides a deep interpretation of 5G use cases in building an automation and intelligent port, aiming to accelerate application research and project commercialization.

As the hub of modern transportation, ports play an important role in promoting international trade. According to relevant statistics, about 90% of global trade relies on maritime transportation. Efficiency is the lynchpin of the port industry. Traditional ports rely on human resources to operate container cranes under harsh working environments, with heavy labor intensity and insufficient personnel. As a result, the rapid development of global sea transportation cannot be met as required. Port automation and intelligent reconstruction have become the industry's overarching goals

With 5G gearing up, thanks to its low latency, large bandwidth and high reliability, 5G will provide a new communication solution for port equipment, and inject new impetus into smart port reconstruction. Based on experience from ZPMC and Huawei, improving container transfer efficiency is the main service requirement for ports, and rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) crane is the first priority scenario. With large bandwidth capability of 5G, real-time transmission of High Definition (HD) videos can be realized, and low latency capability of 5G can realize remote real-time control based on programmable logic controllers (PLCs). The operators can complete gantry crane operations (such as precise movement of cranes or lifting appliances and container pickup) remotely from the central control room. One operator can control multiple gantry cranes while working in a favorable environment, greatly improving working efficiency.

In addition, 5G can provide convenient and low-cost wireless network connections for multiple applications, such as autonomous driving of automated guided vehicles (AGV) and Intelligent Guided Vehicle (IGV), video management in port. In combination with edge computing and AI, 5G can help synchronize and coordinate port devices and production systems, improve the intelligence and operational efficiency.

Through field practice, white paper participants believe partnership is vital to the port industry. In China, Huawei and China Mobile have been consolidating partnerships with ZPMC, and provided 5G private networks in Shanghai Yangshan Port and Ningbo Port to verify RTG carne remote control.

Du Yeqing, Vice President of Huawei’s 5G Product Line said that 5G will not only bring revolutionary experience enhancement to terminal consumers, but also accelerate the digitalization, automation and intelligent transformation of vertical industries. Besides providing high-quality 5G network connections with global operators, Huawei is also looking forward to cooperate with global ecosystem partners to Cultivate new opportunities. With the release of this white paper, Huawei will work with ZPMC, Vodafone and China Mobile to develop more effective solutions for port customers leveraging technologies such as AI, cloud computing, big data, and IoT.
