French bag India’s largest defence order for fighter jets

AMCA missin..will join before 2020...

Finally the wait is over.:victory:
Eurofighter was my favourite. Because it is heavy, can supercruise and looks cooler. But as someone posted above, it is better to have one single supplier than have a bunch of countries hold veto on your supplies. And the US components in EFT would have been pita for India in case of any war. Can somebody comment as to what extent Rafale's components are sourced from other countries, especially US?

The multiple supplier pain of EFT seems to set a pattern for joint venture fighters. They are easy to make but difficult to market especially to bigger buyers.

I was expecting EFT to win this competition. But, yes it's good to see that ministry of defense finally made a decision on MMRCA. 5 years long wait finally ends.

Rafale edges out Eurofighter

India on Tuesday selected the French Fighter Rafale over the Eurofighter Typhoon in a multi-billion dollar contract for the supply of 126 Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) — the country's largest defence deal to date.

Interestingly, for a company that faltered at the start, with the Defence Ministry indicating that the Rafale was out of the race, Dassault made a comeback and went on to win the bid.

The decision to open exclusive negotiations with Dassault was acclaimed by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who praised the “very high-level, fair and transparent competition involving the two European finalists.”

While expressing disappointment over the development, Cassidian — the defence and security division of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company, which manufactures the Typhoon — maintained in a statement that it had offered the IAF the most modern aircraft available.

Sources in the Defence Ministry said the product was picked up on the basis of it being the Lowest Bidder (L1), a decision arrived at after complex calculations, including the life-cycle costs. The two aircraft were chosen from a list of six, including U.S. Boeing (F/A18) and Lockheed Martin (F-16), Russian MiG-35 and Swedish Saab (Gripen), in April last year.

The deal is estimated to be worth $10.2 billion (Rs.54,000 crore). The plan includes acquiring 126 aircraft, 18 of them in fly-away condition and the rest to be made in India at the Hindustan Aeronautics facility under transfer of technology.

For France, the deal is the third big defence contract that has come its way. In the current financial year, the Government of India cleared the $2.4 billion upgrade of 51 Mirage-2000 aircraft and the $970 million supply of MICA fire-and-forget missile for the same aircraft.

India picks French jet over Eurofighter in $10bn deal

French firm Dassault has emerged as the lowest bidder for a $10bn (£6.3bn) contract to supply India jet fighters.

Dassault Aviation, as preferred bidder, will now enter final talks before signing a deal that will supply India's air force with 126 Rafale aircraft.

Correspondents say this is one of the world's biggest defence deals and is a major setback for rival bidder, the Eurofighter Typhoon.

Eurofighter lost out in December on an $8bn deal to supply jets to Japan.

Shares in Dassault Aviation rocketed more than 20% as the latest news broke.

'Purely cost'

The Typhoon is built by the German and Spanish branches of European aerospace giant EADS, Britain's BAE Systems and Italy's Finmeccanica.

Officials at the British High Commission in Delhi said they were disappointed with the decision and would now study the details.

"It was expressly said this was about the cost of the contract, not a reflection on the health of bilateral relations between India and the countries," the commission said.

A spokesman for the Eurofighter Typhoon consortium told the BBC they were disappointed, but stressed that the decision was not final and negotiations were still going on.

"However, we respect the decision of the Indian MoD. With the Eurofighter Typhoon, we offered the Indian Air Force the most modern combat aircraft available," he said.

"Based on the Indian government feedback, we will now carefully analyse and evaluate this situation together with our European partner companies and their respective governments."

BBC defence and diplomatic correspondent Jonathan Marcus says the Indian air force is going through an unprecedented period of modernisation; a response in part to China's developing air power.

Four other bidders had dropped out in the lengthy Indian selection process.

He says various reasons were in play in the Indian decision, including diversifying from Russian hardware and contractual problems with other bidders.

French Minister of State for Foreign Trade Pierre Lellouche welcomed the deal, the first foreign order for the Rafale multi-role jet.

He said: "This is good news and France needs good news right now... It is good news for our aerospace industry and for our defence industry."

Mr Lellouche also complained that "political pressure applied by our competitors does not make things very easy".

James Hardy, Asia Pacific specialist at IHS Jane's Defence Weekly, said this was a "big loss for Eurofighter".

"The Typhoon was widely tipped to be the favourite and had major political support from the big beasts of the Eurofighter nations. Both Germany and the UK invested a lot of time in pushing the Typhoon, so this will hurt."

Indian Defence Minister AK Antony had earlier cautioned that this remained a "long process" and that no deal would be signed before the end of March.

One Indian defence ministry source confirmed to Reuters that the Rafale had been "much cheaper unit-wise", adding: "Moreover, the Indian air force, which is well-equipped with French fighters, is favouring the French."

India is the biggest arms importer among emerging nations.

I don't think it would have made any difference whethere Rafale or the EF won the contract, both are very good aircrafts. Just bloody glad that it is over & done with. I'm pretty sure the IAF & the MoD got whatever they wanted. Excellent work by the MoD to do what is a fairly transparent job in such a huge deal. For once, I'm thankful for St. Antony. There will be no whispers of a kickback with him around, the deal is pretty much safe on that score. Otherwise, we might have had this deal going the Bofors way, crippling the force.

Selecting rafale was a good decision, one country, one entity to ask spares and services from, with EF, it would have been a very different situation... add to that the british arrogance... Im happy with this decision

The claim of multiple suppliers is bogus. EFT privy to Indian concerns went out of their way to tell India that it have no problems with spares as India would be a major hub for the manufacturing of the EFT as it woul drive down costs. India would the only to enter as equal partner. Also, another way of looking at the benefit of dealing with 4 countries, is that you have leverage with 4 nations on weapon deals with Pakistan. Rafale is a dying airplane.....i wonder how much corruption was involved or did the French allow indiividuals to park their cash in French banks? Its sad that so many forgot how the French have fuked India over with the Scorpene Sub deal....tech transfer failed to measure to the hype and reality.....multiple delays....etc......wake the f-k up...

On the Brit note, I agree with you. Why does INdia still deal with the UK on favorable terms. The Brits need to be taught a long overdue lesson on being civilized. India and Indians are so naive except for a few who see the UK in a clear view. They are not our friends and have not made any attempts at actual friendship. For them, we are a cash cow....simple. If the Brits want to deal with India on a positive note with the future in mind......tell them to give us back our priceless artifacts. Why the double standards? Tell me why is Greece allowed to have their Elgin Marbles back and not us? This is something the bloody media and gov't should bring up and educate the masses.

Yes but it is easy to deal with one nation rather than 3 or 4 different one. Sure India will be a hub for spare parts but what about R&D, the Consortium would most likely not give India full partnership that is guaranteed. There is also the issue of US parts in the EFT so I think India doesn't want to get involved into anything related to the US, because then it comes with too many strings attached.

Just because something is cheaper in costs doesn't mean its worth it. Our enemies are building a weapons with mind on the future. EFT was the best and it is continually upgraded to meet new threat assessments

Yes but the Rafale isn't that far behind. India should be more worried about the FGFA program, a 5th generation fighter is much more of the importance to India, so I am thinking that the MOD is thinking of investing into the AMCA and learn more from the FGFA.

agreed on each and every statement... but somebody needs to bring back the balls of politicians back before anything...

FINALLY!

Lets hope the deal is signed and deliveries happen on time and on budget.

The IAF needs the planes.
