Five suspected terrorists allegedly belonging to the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its breakaway faction Jamaatul Ahrar (JuA) were killed during an encounter in the Layyah district of southern Punjab late Saturday night.

According to Express News, the terrorists were planning an attack in Multan. The report said the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of Punjab Police carried out a raid on the basis of a tip off.

During the ensuing firefight, five militants were killed. It is believed that a couple of terrorists also managed to escape by taking advantage of the night. CTD officials said they also recovered arms and ammunition – including hand grenades – during the raid.

Security forces have mounted search operations across the country in the wake of the recent terror wave. So far more than 100 suspected terrorists have been killed during encounters.
