'First flight of UAV Rustom-2 scheduled in Feb, 2014'

BANGALORE: The first flight test of indigenously developed UAV Rustom-2, set to be used solely for defence purposes, would take place in February 2014, a top Aeronautical Development Establishment official said today.

"Designing of Rustom-2 has been completed, purchase orders have been placed and we are on schedule to fly for the first time in February 2014," ADE Director P S Krishnan told reporters.

He said the entire project of making 10 Rustom-2 UAVs and spare vehicles at a cost of Rs 1,540 crore would be completed by August 2017.

Indigenous technology would enable ADE save about 40 per cent cost, he said, adding that all parts, except for cameras and sensors, have been developed in the country.

Weighing 1.8 tonnes, Rustom-2 would have a capacity payload of 350 kg, a wing span of 21-odd meters and an endurance of above 24 hours, he said.

Rustom-2 is in the league of US 'Predator' drones due to its advanced capabilities and additional payloads, he said.

"Rustom UAVs could be deployed for military missions like reconnaissance and surveillance, target acquisition, target designation, communications relay, battle damage assessment and signal intelligence," Krishnan said.


In future, India would also develop Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) and solar drones, he said.

Rustom-2, designed and developed by ADE, a DRDO laboratory, is comparable to top drones in the world, he said.

The second edition of the two-day international Conference on Autonomous Unmanned Vehicles would get underway here from February 24, Krishnan said.

We know that there will be delays, I just hope that it flies by end of 2014. I had seen this big bird in Bangalore Air Show. It looked dam impressive. Also, It's good to find out that every thing is made in India except camera and sensor.

why would u say there will be delays? get over ur steriotypical belief about indian defence. ijt sitara 36 flew 2 yrs ahead of schedule even though everyone doubted we could make an advanced trainer.

After this there won't be a huge jump from Rustom-H (Rustom-2) to Rustom-C with air-launched missiles.

In a first of its kind, India is planning to develop an indigenous missile called HELINA which is to be deployed in the weaponized version of the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopoter (ALH). The state-owned Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) expects to be ready with this missile by 2013.

The HELINA, abbreviation for helicopter-launched Nag missile, will be an air-to-ground version of the Nag missile which will be integrated into the weaponized version of the Dhruv ALH. As per the programme, the Nag missile’s propulsion will be augmented and will facilitate to take on enemy tanks from range of 8 kilometers. According to DRDO, the HELINA is part of the missile development programme and will be offered for user trials by 2013.

The HELINA version of the Nag missile will be airborne and will have a lock-on-after system extending its range to nearly 8 kiloimetres. The missile will be launched in the general direction of the target and will feed images back to the operator. The operator would then identify the target for the missile to attack. The advanced HELINA version will use a nose-mounted millimetric-wave active radar seeker.

According to sources, the possibility of extending the range of the HELINA anti-armour missile into a 20 kilometre range strike missile is also being envisaged. Also, the team behind HELINA is building a miniaturised inertial navigation package to improve the performance of the weapon without adding weight and avoiding additional cost. Sources added that HELINA has been captive flight-tested and a scheduled first firing is planned late this year. There is a feasibility study underway to integrate the HELINA onto the Rustom-H Medium Altitude Long Endurance (Rustom H-MALE) drone.

The HELINA is an advanced version of the Nag missile. Nag missile is a third generation fire-and-forget anti-tank missile with top attack capability. Nag missile has a range of 4 kilometers and equipped with imaging infra red seeker, lock-on-before launch capability with the seeker tracking the target before the launch.
