First Bearded General of Pakistan Army

On the Islamisation of Pakistan Army

g.javed.gif

Lieutenant General (retd) Javed Nasir who was the Director General of the Inter Services Intelligence from March 1992 to May 1993.
Without having any doubt about his personality, he is a true Muslim and a true patriot. He has written over 100 articles. His pro-Islam, anti-US and anti-India stance has created a very large readership in Pakistan and abroad. He symbolizes the institutions of practicing Muslims through his association with the non-political and peaceful Tablighi Jamaat. He was noted for being the first Pakistani general to have a full-grown beard against tradition of having only clean-shaved generals in the Pakistan Army after joining the Tablighi Jamaat

For years, the top brass drummed into midranking officers a sense of Islamic mission. A Prophet-length beard helped an officer’s promotion, as did praying five times a day. Now, says Masood, “the army is taking measures against officers who are too religious minded.” Those deemed overly fanatic are discreetly steered into nonsensitive or dead-end jobs, he says, and a soldier needs permission from his commanding officer before he is permitted to grow a beard

Now
Two instances will prove how radicalisation has seeped into the core of the Pakistan Army. One, when Pakistan Army moved in to Swat for Operation Rah-e-Haq in 2007, it was a great challenge for the army to explain to its troops (315 Brigade) as to why the soldiers had to fight fellow Muslim jehadis who were merely asking for the Shariah, an Islamic religious law (see this blogpost).
For its part, the army has so far failed to express regret about either Bhatti’s murder or Taseer’s. The army chief General Ashfaq Kayani declined to publicly condemn Taseer’s death or even to issue a public condolence to his family. He told Western ambassadors in January in Islamabad that there were too many soldiers in the ranks who sympathize with the killer, and showed them a scrapbook of photographs of Taseer’s killer being hailed as a hero by fellow police officers. Any public statement, he hinted, could endanger the army’s unity.[NYRB]
For many years, it has been said that Pakistan Army controls the Islamist jehadi groups in the region. Then, it was seen as a military-jehadi complex in Pakistan. That is also passée now. Perhaps the balance has now completely shifted to the other side. It is the jehadis and the Islamists which control the Pakistan Army now.
And yes, not to forget, it is the very same army which has 110 nuclear bombs in its arsenal.

The culture that this dude belonged to does not largely exist within the Army any more.

BoseDK you are connecting the dots between very disparate issues. The story that Kayani declined to condemn the killing is just that a story. He didn't condemn Benazir's killing either. Nor the many many other deaths that have happened in Pakistan. Simply put, its not his place to make condemnation statements. That is the responsibility of the nation-state.

This is a case of over-thinking and making the good guys in Pakistan look like the bad ones for no apparent reason. In the fight against extremism, Kayani is an asset.

. .
Why we should be concerned about a retired general and what he thinks. He is not relevant anymore.

As for Kiyani, if he remains apolitical then why the world has a problem? Army is showing extreme restraint to not to interfere in the politics. They should stay that way.

By the way if i rightly remember, flowers were send from General Kiyani for Taseer grave. I have seen armymen covering his grave with flowers he send. This came in the news. So i think symbolically he send his condolences.

Mehru Jee,

PA not showing "extreme restraint" of not interfering into politics, is not out of any pious virtue. It is becaue this is the worst possible time for PA to take control of pakistan. Given the social and economic conditions of pakistan, the PA already is quite comfortable to let the common people on street think it is the failure of elected representatives and not PA that is worsening pakistans conditions day by day. (Please bear in mind that its PA which calls all shots and should take ownership of the rights and wrongs)

Consider this, Whjy would Kayani take over, if he has to publicly condemn, a tasseer style killing, whcih he cannot, considering the vast Ghazi-mania prevelant in masses. Also, if the army took over, what are they going to do with the economy? How are they going to convince IMF to give more loans and ignore their previous loan defaults? How can they accept the humiliating Kerry lugar bill directly even after showing public displeasure on the humiliating clauses? They need someone to do the awkward stuffs, while being able to show that they have preserved their "honour and dignity".

Hence, The point of blaming now shifts to the army instead of elected representatives, if they were to take over.

So long as PA is having a scape goat, named Zardari, it can divert all the public anger of non-performance in economic and social and terrorism fronts Instead of owning up to those.

Zardari is too happy to be a president. PA is too happy that it doesnt get any blames for all the mess that is happening in pakistan today. Its a win win game for all.

Army didn't ask the Govt to show ineptitude and bad governance. They were in control of Pakistan affairs for the last three years. What did they do? Any economic plan? Any educational plan. I will not blame army this time for the failure of current Govt. They are themselves responsible for this mess. They didn't provide proper security to Bhatti and Taseer. They isolated their leaders themselves. They have deviated from their path of liberalism. Their continuous appeasement and their weakness is solely responsible for this failure. They also didn't condemn these assassinations. Why picking out army only?

As for the army, they could overthrow this Govt at any time if they want to. Why? Because this Govt has no support of the masses. They are deeply unpopular now. That's why we call them weak. Haven't you seen youth protesting against democracy or Govt? Haven't you seen them time and again asking for coup. It's a sad reality. You have no idea that how much people are frustrated here. You will even notice this trend on this forum. Some asking for caliphate, some asking for sharia. Why? Because they think that democracy has no answer to their problems.

I never claimed that PA is pious. Army don't want the negative coverage which is understandable. However right now people are in favour of them and they know this very well. It's better for the Govt to mend their ways before it's too late.

I still defend democracy and still wants to support this current Govt but i am unable to satisfy people who are sick of Zardari and co. They have still two years to go. Let's see what happens.

I am find keeping long beards dangerous to one's own health and happiness as also because of my concern for the environment.

These days trees are being cut indiscriminately in the name of development.

There is always a danger that a bird might build a nest in a long beard thinking that it is his ideal ashiana!!

And, in addition, the Chinese might cut the beard off and make a Bird's Nest Soup out of it!!

This is the most amazingly humorous part. So you think a 3 year dosage of Zardari can undo all the s*** that Army has bestowed upon pakistan in 60 years of its rule? Do you even remember Zia-ul-haq and what he did 30 years ago that is biting the A** of the very army that spoon feeded the jihadis?

Its not only the Army, Its the politicians and the Army both who are responsible for the situation where Pakistan finds itself today. And yes, the Zardari and co. cannot undo all of that in 3 years but at least they can show their intent, at least they can stop looting the country, at least they can present economic rescue plans to the people but have they done anything? No! This is why this govt is so unpopular.

No certainly i don't expect them to do magic. However who has stopped them from reducing corruption. Can't they think of any plan which could improve situation? No they are happy to get aid from IMF and to sleep for the next 2 years. Don't even try to defend this Govt. They should complete their term and get lost. I am only going to bear them for the next two years because it is important for the future of democracy. It is solely their bad governance that always gives an excuse to army. That's what they don't understand. If they have mass support then army will think twice before interfering in politics.

It is common people like you who have elected such folks. Blame goes to you all. You people let the sincere ones down by not voting them.

.
No one will stop anything so long as their personal and organisational interest is protected.

They have not done such a simple thing like land reforms which is the first step for empowerment!!

Why?

The Politicians are jagirdars and so are the people of the Army.

Have a good nights sleep.
