Those times that the Islamic Republic team (not Iran) had a little above average performance was because the people fully supported them. Take the Fifa 2018 world cup as an example, all Iranians were supporting them and they almost knocked out Portugal and Spain to go to the next round.

Football is a 100 times bigger sport than all those small useless Olympic sports combined, lol. Football is by far the biggest sport everywhere in the Middle East, including Iran.

What is next, are you going to mention cricket which is non-existent in Iran as well as in all Arab states aside from UAE?

Is KSA the only Arab country? KSA has barely competed in any Olympic Games. Women were only allowed to compete 2 Olympics ago. 90% of all Olympic Sports are joke sports that nobody cares about mostly. Tiny sports. 95% of all the focus in most Arab countries are on football.

Rest are on athletics (where KSA has done better than Iran), horse racing, falconry (none of those sports are in the Olympics), handball etc.

Secondly migrants (of which half are Arab) in KSA make up 25% of the population but none of them are Saudi Arabian citizens so they don't compete in any sports or tournaments where KSA compete in.

Arabs have won the most African Nation Cups (champions of Africa) of all teams. Arabs have won the most Asian Cup tournaments (champions of Asia) of all teams. Similarly with football clubs in both continents (Africa and Asia) with Arab teams dominating.

Some of the biggest football stars in history have been of Arab origin or partial Arab origin from South America (Brazil, Argentina) to Europe (France etc.). Several of them having won the World Cup several times for their teams.

There is no competition on who is better in this sport. Iran can have bragging rights by being better in some marginal sports (such as wrestling) that nobody in Arab countries cares about.
