For e.g. Devdasi's were Hindu Nuns who lived in the temple under the protection of the king and was dedicated to devotional dance and music.

Islamic invasion removed the kings protection and the temples were destroyed and this resulted them being forced into prostitution since nobody could marry someone who was already married to god.

In places of south India where the islamic invasion did not reach, the Devdasi's were held in great respect and were great scholars.
