WASHINGTON: The Defense Department has said that it wants to sell up to 75 fighter jets to Israel in a USD 15.2 billion deal for the aircraft expe
cted to be the mainstay of air power in the US and several other nations for decades.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said on Monday that it had notified the Congress on Friday that Israel has asked to buy 25 of the F-35s made by Lockheed Martin Corp, with an option to buy an additional 50 at a later date.

The sale would be the first to a country outside of the US and eight partner nations that are collaborating on the F-35, also known as the Joint Strike Fighter. The jet is still under development and is not yet in service, but the US plans to eventually acquire 2,458 planes for the Army, Marines and Air Force at a cost of USD 300 billion.

The F-35 was designed as a replacement for a range of warplanes, including the F-16, which is a large component of many air forces worldwide. Countries such as Spain, Singapore and Japan also have expressed interest in the F-35.

Israel has said it plans to buy a fleet of F-35s as it upgrades its military technology. The first batch of 25 would be the variant of F-35 designed for conventional take off from military airfields, but the later 50 could include a version that can land vertically.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a statement that the proposed sale will help Israel "develop and maintain a strong self-defense capability." It also said that sale of the technologically advanced fighter won't upset the balance of military power in the region.

The US is developing the plane with nations that include Britain, Australia and Italy, though the Pentagon has shouldered much of the funding. Plans currently call for the military to start flying the plane in 2010.

i want 2 tell you that all te E.U countries are gonna get the F-35A as well as F-35B coz of VTOL to take surgical operations in battle environment in which they had to hide in selters or bunkers.
About costomers i want to say that i heard on forum thet Israel and Japan as well as canada and australia are on the it hit list on gettin RAPTOR (F-22B) and israel had ordered 50 F-22 jets and u would be amazed to hear that i saw news on CNN in April or May -08 that Australia in negotiating to buy about 50 Raptors but no more reports they only that what they now is that Pentagon has prohabited the sale of any 5th gen jets to any country.But it was quite conform tat they wanted to increase their fleet and may be wanted to buy some ex-USAF hornets upgraded to latest avionics. Which is bit worrisom for japan and other East Asian countries especially for China. India is also interested in buying F-35 variant and Us kitty hawk carrier but before that they had please US by buying some ex-USAF hornets as well as expensive Super hornets other than 126 MRCA but interesting thing about F-16Blk-70 is that i heard on ARY One world in May that India is getting Special F-16 from US that will be capable of flying over 2000km/hr and can carry nuclear weapons and after that in June i read a slide on the CNN te india apologises US on jet deal then i understand that why every indian in forum was critisising F-16.But in my opinion the MRCA would be MIG-35/ SU-35 or they are gonna increase SU-30 production but it can be Super Grippen(may be $65 million fly away) and not Rafael($68-71 million flyaway) or EF-2000($126 million complete) coz it is too expensive
About Japan i think tey are gonna end their own 5th gen program(JapaneseTD-X) and may buy F-35 and F-22 from US and also for S.korea KF-X , most of the people related to that said that they souldn't go for it instead they sould build single seat version of te T-50 may be composite materials so as to make them happy that it would be 4.5th gen jet or which they were tinking.

So are you saying that EF and the F-35 are on the same league? If not then the comparison doesnt exist at the first place. Also Israel does not have any threat from Saudi Arabia. The only threat that it has is from Iran or perhaps a bit from Syria and none of these countries have anything even closely related to what the Israelis already have(F-15, F-16s), yet alone the F-35. So to say that it will not effect the regional balance is nothing more then a plain lie.

to strike deep in iran,all they have to do is give israel aid and weapons and it will do the job for its own suvival, anyways more f35 may be supplied to israel and there could be a US base with f22 in israel for future strikes,
while the US is expanding bases like in afghanistan,pakistan,
it also becomes necessary forIndia-Russia to have stealth fighters squadrons ready as soon as possible,hence comes Pakfa.
