Probably the are doing some flight testing dealing with fluid mechanics like the SR-71.

They act as stealth testbeds.. the only Aircraft flying currently are the Grey Ghost painted F-117's(two).

i think i have seen this plane in movie broken arrow.....or maybe another movie where it flies and gets its self attached with a 747.

i have heard this plane cant recover from a roll-over cause of its design.

They probably want to resurrect it and convert it into an unmanned weapons platform and turn it into an even more potent and usable “silver bullet” attack force by removing the pilot from the equation. In an unmanned combat aircraft configuration, the F-117s could have been loaded with a pair of 2000lb GPS guided Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs) or nuclear tipped missiles and sent into the most defended targets in the world, with a man in the loop to control it’s actions.

The the jets could also be sent on one-way suicide missions to strike critical air defense nodes and other key targets very deep inside enemy territory, self destructing once their bombs have been dropped. Aircraft modified in this fashion would have no need to actively communicate with a command post or mission control center.

It is therefore possible that a small handful or the aircraft seen flying today is experimenting with such a conversion. Who knows, maybe even a crude version of such a conversion has been tested and could be implemented on the remaining mothballed Nighthawk fleet during a time of war against an enemy with an advanced integrated air defense system.

This would have been a better use of the F-117s than having them sit in dark hangers in the middle of nowhere!

That could be right since at air shows, it only made passes and turns, the pre-fix "F" is also a bit of a misnomer since it performed missions as a bomber.
