Exorbitant Expenditure- On Weddings In Pakistan
The Pakistani society has made a complete joke out of the institution of marriage by turning it into a rat race of wealth display.What can be a simple celebration has turned into a food and dance festival for most of the distant relatives,most of whom you will probably never meet again.The shocker comes when you learn that parents,proper OH SO LIBERAL and educated parents ,have been saving up for years only so that they can feed free biryani to 1000 people on a hotels pool side one night.Mostly middle class families of Pakistan can not imagine abandoning these traditions.If someone opts to do this,they have to face resentment of their family and ridicule from a section of the society.
Lavish functions of Mehndi,Barat & Valima are celebrated.Alot of pomp and show is now associated with weddings and more money is spent on every aspect than is needed.One such example is the bridal dress.Any amount from Rs 25k to 8 lakhs is spent on a dress that the bride will never use again..Whereas the option of inexpensive dresses is available but they still choose to spend and exorbitant amount.Moreover,a lot is spent on gold jewellery even though the prices are sky high!!Why not opt for a silver , platinum or gold plated jewellery??Because of the pressure of social customs and LOAG KIA KAHENGAY .
By and large,women in Pakistan love big weddings and the men had to better foot the bill or else there will be hell to pay.This is not to say that the men do not enjoy the festivities,ofcourse,nor that many women are not in favour of extravagance,nor even that some women do not help pay for their own weddings.But,on balance,what the women wants is usually closer to what happens.
Whats curious to note is that lavish wedding ceremonies are not at all met with scorn.Agreed,celebrations and rituals are the binding forces for people,in which family,friends and relatives reunite.However moderation and frivolity in spending on such celebrations should also be kept in mind.
