IAF-Royal Air Force joint exercise resumes
After a two-day break, fliers of the Indian Air Force and the Royal Air Force were back in the skies on Monday as part of Indradhanush, the joint exercise between the two countries that started in the Kalaikunda Air Force Station in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district last week.
Progressing well
The exercise has been progressing very well so far. None of the sorties was stopped despite bad weather conditions that were seen last week as a result of cyclonic circulations in the head bay, in northern Bay of Bengal, said Mahesh Upasani, Chief Public Relations Office, Ministry of Defence.
The pilots continued on their respective missions saying that the weather conditions only added to the challenge, he added.
While pilots would continue with missions related to Large Force Engagements for now, the next phase of the exercise will begin on October 27, which includes RADAR denial, he said.
Focus on air defence
The missions in this exercise are focussed on air defence.
The first phase, Large Force Engagement,' deals with the deployment of a large number of aircraft within a limited air-space, a situation that can be a nightmare for air traffic controllers, but commonly faced in combat situations, sources said.
Since the attack and defence aircraft come in waves, planes come into close proximity in the skies and the skills of both the fighter pilots and fighter-controller (the person manning the RADAR) are tested, they added.
The second phase of the exercise, RADAR denial, deals with a situation when due to unforeseen circumstances, the RADAR stops functioning.

The final phase of Indo-UK Air Exercise Indradhanush began today i.e. on 28 Oct 2010 at AF Station Kalaikunda with increased number of launches and full scale Large Force Engagement (LFE) missions. So far over 120 missions of the exercise have already been flown successfully achieving the mission objectives.
Ex Indradhanush joint air exercise between The IAF and RAF (Royal Air Force) began on 18 Oct 2010 at Kalaikunda Airbase in West Midnapur district, West Bengal . The flying missions commenced on 20 Oct, with aim to enhance mutual operational understanding and refine the procedures. The RAF is participating with its Eurofighters, VC-10 mid air refuellers and E 3 D Sentry Airborne Early warnings and control systems (AWACS). The IAF on the other hand has fielded the SU 30s, Mirage 2000s, Mig-27s and the newly acquired AWACS which are taking part in a Joint exercise for the first time.
In the final phase of the exercise a large number of aircraft in offensive and defensive roles are expected to be launched in ‘Waves’ in a limited airspace. The AWACS of both the air forces would also be launched, and with large no of aircraft in a limited airspace the skills of both fighter pilots and the controllers would be put to test. Thus the extent of difficulty would be a few notches up than the previous phases of Ex Indrdhanush.
The High value Air Asset (HVAA) protection missions would also be carried out simultaneously drawing a large number of aircraft of participating forces together, increasing the challenge further more. The exercise Indradhanush 2010 would conclude on 03 Nov 2010.

hmmm everything looks great... but no o/p about how the fighters fared well especially MKI vs Typhoon ... hmmm IAF & RAF has kept it as a top secret

I have a question!
During Red Flag our MKIs were not able to connect to NATO standard datalinks and the AWACS could not effectively provide target data to them. In the latest pics we see EFs that possibly protects the Mig 27s during strike role and it is likely that they will get AWACS support of the E-3, but won't the Migs be handicapped in the same ways the MKIs were? Does IAF M2Ks and Jags have these problems?

So we might see exercises with French navy Rafales during EX - Varuna I would say hopefully with our Mig 29Ks too. Would be interesting to see how they perform against the Rafale M, especially for IN.
