Exclusive: TikTok's Chinese owner offers to forego stake to clinch U.S. deal - sources

It doesn't matter, that's not an excuse. He should've been protected by his 1st amendment rights but wasn't, he neither harassed, called for violence or violated any of Twitter's policies. He merely expressed his views on race and religion, people were free to block his account if they didn't like his views. By agreeing with this you essentially proved my point, social media companies aren't free speech platforms and neither is the US (anymore). As such you're a hypocrite because you believe in conditional speech, not free speech absolutism.

The fact is that social media controls public discourse. You can no longer go out into the town square and express your opinion with a megaphone because it's an inadequate and outdated form of expression. Twitter, Facebook and Google, with their hundreds of millions of users have a duty to respect freedom of expression outlined in the American constitution. Censoring speech you don't like leads to violent outcomes like mass shootings and terror attacks because when people can no longer resolve problems through communication, they result to violence because it's the only way to get their message heard.

It's public knowledge that these social media companies violate data protection laws and share it with US intelligence, I don't need to spoon feed you specific examples when everything was laid out to the world during the Snowden leaks.

Wishing a conspiracy won't make it real. There is no freedom of speech on private platforms. If you like his racist views you have the freedom to object, but if you break the decency TOS on those platforms, you will be chucked out. Just like you will be here.

Social media platforms don't put out content and your expression of some agenda is just your opinion. Thanks for engaging.

You can wish a conspiracy, but facts tell otherwise.

David Duke is an open KKK and white supremacist sympathizer and leader. Twitter finally banned him from his endless racist views over the years (he was on the platform for years).

You are perhaps new to Twitter, but it's a platform where people set up their accounts. Twitter does not have its agenda or own accounts to promote any political agenda. It states that the content needs to meet universal decency laws and criminal laws.

There is no requirement of free speech within the US private companies. This website is hosted within an American data center. Try to tell the ownership you have free speech rights here and test out the response.

Finally, please show us any US law that requires all US private organizations to give up and share all user data upon request.
Sorry you have to take so much flak for explaining why a racist piece of shit have to be banned from a social media site is actually a good move by the provider.

On behalf of this forum I apologize & salute u o7

Look, I get your frustration because you grow up in an environment where you are fed extremely restricted content along with intense propaganda about the world outside. Ask a Chinese American here if any of those platforms blocked the George Floyd video. That video is was all over Twitter, Facebook, US media and TV channels.

Twitter did not support anyone in Xinjiang, where hundreds of thousands of Muslims are being tortured and put into labor camps. It's the Chinese people who put up their content on those platforms once they smuggle it out of China. Twitter does not create and put out the content. In Syria, it was Syrian people who put up the content.
When George Floyd incident just happened, the video was gone from Facebook and Twitter. Only when the incident became hot, people started to talk it in Facebook and Twitter.
The rioters I referred to in Xingjiang is 7.5 riot in 2009. Hundreds innocent people were killed by rioters.
9 years ago in Syria, a kid was mistreated by police for a slight crime. Thank to US apps propaganda, it became the reason why the Syria civil war broke out.

See. Same kind of police violence. Different attitudes from US apps in different countries.

Isn't that just because of algorithm removing all "violent" videos like the murder of Floyd & not some sort of western conspiracy against china.

We see all these countries pushing back on Chinese tech and apps and use similar concerns as of the United States of America
Because of US' control on other countries. We can see that from Huawei ban.
Yes, in the US, any company can refuse to give up user data. Govt has to go to the courts to prove its case, and then too; they have to prove their case, one user, at a time. Unlike your law, that is CCP edict with no legal alternatives.
Link: US Companies that protect ser private data from the US govt.
The company can refuse until US government uses security law

Another hypocrite, free speech ends when it starts to offend me. Mr. Duke must've really got under your skin for you to undermine the very fabric of the American constitution because meanthink hurts your feefees.

This is why no one takes western concerns about Hong Kong seriously, pot calling the kettle black much?

Mr. Duke didn't violate Twitter rules or TOS, expressing views on race and religion didn't violate twitter rules but he was still banned. Allowing private enterprise to regulate speech without any oversight is as bad as regulating speech by law, it is a massive flaw in the supposed American democracy. Deny it all you want it's still true.

The only solution is nationalising social media or having a government watchdog ensure that peoples rights aren't violated, and vigorously pursue them when they are.

You're so disingenuous that you believe social media doesn't promote specific political agendas and stifle others, this is bordering on mindless free market idealism that has essentially defined America since the 60s, this ideology combined with neoconservative thought will do more damage than China, Russia, Iran could ever hope.

Its kind of hillarious how U.S. regime apologists, try to appeal to some nonexistant populum when echoing mallicous spins and fake "concerns" of Chinese laws they have been spoonfed by their regimes mouthpieces, while defending the U.S regimes own actions that prove times again that everything the U.S. claims and writes into law or press, is a farce and ad-hom with projections of their own ignorance and lack of education to justify not just their hypocrisy but blatant deflection of a regime that keeps coming out as the only culprit for all the things it accuses others to do and be a threat for.

Here the U.S. regime stands alone with colonialist rogue regimes in tow a toddler can count of its hands, forced to fluff up its numbers with occupied micronesian island nations and they talk about some "international front against China" when China musters fivefold the backup despite beligerent U.S. threats against nations speaking out their minds.

Even their ideological ally has gotten tired of this bullshit and the EU just ruled that U.S. laws are a sham and do not actually protect private data from the U.S. regimes unwarranted access and do not actually make U.S. companies able to resist the U.S regimes orders to spy on both nationals and foreign data for it, but second class humans in Asian countries that have to deal every day with political and selfinterested rulings by U.S. cangaroo courts and U.S. pirate "justice" that is spun and interpreted however it suits them, are supposed to buy this bullshit about the U.S. regime giving a single **** about privacy rights or laws of others or even it own serfs.

Thats exactly why nobody gives a **** about any moral preaching and ranting from the U.S. anymore.

Your pitch for supporting David Duke, a white supremacist, is that in all of his time on Twitter since 2009, when all he does is talk about white supremacy and white only America, he was not a racist - Because you are the judge of Twitter's TOS'?

You seem to be confused with the distinction between a 'Platform owner like Twitter' and the content its users put out. Social media platform owners don't promote personal agenda; social media 'users' promote their agenda. This inability to accept distinctions is maybe why you can't understand that there is no guarantee of freedom of speech on private platforms.

What's next, you will say the holocaust did not take place, 911 was an inside job, and Alex Jones is a messiah of truth?

It is sheer foolishness of Bytedance owners thinking that selling off US operation will stop US deep state (and Trump) going after them. Core of the US issue is that US DO NOT WANT anyone to be better, period.

Now question is why Bytedance is so desperate for US market and why it is so desperate? Isn't there any Chinese state support or consultation with the Bytedance? It can do well in rest of the world. If US competitors can not catch up, US consumers will one way or another use ticktok for better features. Also, if US officially ban US consumers from using tick tok, US will be starting journey towards becoming a tyrannic state which is far more damaging to US population and and to the world. Hope Bytedance call the bluff and move forward with innovation......

Many countries agree with the US' reasons and are formulating their response. What's troublesome in terms of revenue growth for Chinese tech giants is countries with large markets, and those with rich with investment dollars are turning away.
  • EU agree with the US' reasons and are formulating their response.
  • India- says it banned Chinese apps, and I bet 5 G hardware too for the same reason.
  • Aus - said it was the same reason.
I'm not stating a prejudicial or surprising viewpoint to anyone aware of the existing worldview when I say these countries are not associated with having kangaroo courts. Alternatively, the Chinese judicial system has a reputation for being kangaroos courts and a widely accepted worldview.

White supremacy is a misnomer and shows how clueless you are about the political landscape in your country. A "racist" is someone who expresses hatred towards a group of people over something they cannot control. Mr Duke has never done this, pointing out and criticising black crime rate and Jewish over representation in media and politics is not racist, in the past Mr. Duke actually visited black colleges to discuss race issues. You have no idea what you're talking about and are just emotionally baiting with buzzwords to appear morally superior.

Twitter, Facebook and Google are no longer 'platforms' but publishers with ideological bias against conservative thought. This is blatantly obvious given their string of recent bans.

Pressure countries with sanctions if they don't fall in line = Oooh they agree with US justifications

Surprising

When I was active duty, I made friends with a few people in the intelligence sector of the USAF, namely, the guys who flies those SIGINT flights off the coasts of the Soviet Union and China. So am going to paraphrase what I learned from these guys...

Let us say I am a burglar looking at your house.

Let us say I intercepted a message you sent to your parents: " We are having a great time in Disneyland. "

According to communication specialists, of which there are plenty in the intel world, the bulk of our communication is composed of 'filler materials'. Since I am a burglar looking to rob you, do I care if you have a 'great time' in Disneyland? No, I do not. Of that sentence, I am only interested in four words: " We" , " are ", " in " , and " Disneyland ". It does not matter if I decoded the sentence out of order. The English language is such that with those four letters, I know when to rob you. Fifty percent of your message was 'filler materials'.

Under Chinese laws, TT is obligated to provide the Chinese government with as much user data as possible when ordered. Not requested, but ORDERED. A request at least implied an option to refuse. This is not the case. If ordered, TT must comply. It is not just TT but all companies with size over X employees that the national intelligence law applied.

So what can China do with user data from a social media software? More threats than you can think of.

Nefariously speaking, I can use that user data to compile a list of highest concentration of young Americans and disperse NBC agents to targets in that list. US military bases are open knowledge, so I can use that user data to compile a list of time when there is lowest social media activities to hint at base operations. This is not new. Washington DC pizza operators know whenever something is up at the Pentagon based on sharp spikes of delivery orders.

"Core of the US issue is that US DO NOT WANT anyone to be better, period."

... I will stick to verifiable facts. The only way we can sustain ourselves as a wealthy nation is by having buyers outside of the US,. We don't have a billion people as a consumer base.

American industries and governments have invested and continue to do so in many countries, for this very reason.

1. The Chinese industrial GDP growth was hugely in part of American companies building their industrial export base. Teaching the Chinese, starting in the late 80s: the know-how behind the western global industrial infrastructure, developing and scaling their global supply chain, getting membership into the WTO, and investing substantial American FDI in China. Let's not forget access to the American consumer base leading to fantastic growth. All of this has come back to bite us now, especially getting them accepted into the WTO.

However, I will accept that we do want to be leaders in specific fields and technology. That's part of being competitive for our people and economy.

2. We want more consumers in the world to afford the high valued products we sell! Suppose Bangladesh becomes the world's number one garment producer and a 5 trillion dollar GDP economy. That then, it bodes well for high-valued US products being affordable to its high per capita consumers.

If India can move into a 10 trillion dollar economy, that bodes exceptionally well for our products sold to a market of a billion people! So on and so forth with most other nations.

3. America wants to see shared prosperity among many nations
because it cascades into high incomes for all emerging economies.

Bangladesh may reap continued export success to the Indian market if their manufacturers move away from making certain products because their prosperity resulted in higher costs to manufacture. Similar to the US, where we don't make many lesser valued products anymore. Yet, a very lucrative for the Chinese to sell to our consumers.

Given this backdrop, it could not be further from the truth to say we are only about us.
