Exclusive - Saudi Arabia, U.S. in talks on billions in arms sales

Each thing at its time..These deals with the US are of paramount importance for KSA and the GCC..there are already deals between KSA and Turkey in the defence industry and beyond..Pakistan is a strategic ally of KSA and there will be significant deals in the future, one most likely deal is for buying a big number of the JF-17 that was announced by the head of KSA military when he visited Pakistan not too far ago..

KSA could have got TOT for T 90 tank relying heavily on just one supplier is a stupidity

Russian weapons are also at par or better than American weapons such as

Russian T 90 MS, S 400, SU 35 etc in ships Russia also can offer new technologies to KSA with TOT

100 Billions are enough for Russian to sign these for deals

That is seriously a lot. Which nation in the world would need 110 billion dollars worth of weapons immediately? With this type of money, they can easily start up their own major defense industry (and keep it one of the top-budget in the world). They should seriously invest somewhere else.
Only if they listen to someone!

Russia has positioned itself, strategically, as a rival to the Saudis. Just a cursory look at Syria or a glance at Russia Today is enough to see that.

Russia is also a criminal, recalcitrant and brutish actor in the Middle East. The idea that the Saudis should empower their military industry or entrust them with the Kingdom's defence is wrong.

Can anyone list in point form - What KSA is buying in this $100 Billion from USA?

Most of this money does eventually end up in R&D..........for the US Defense industry!

What Saudi Arabia and UAE has done over the decades is massively fund US Defence industry's R&D. Would the US be able to keep this supreme edge without the Trillions of $$$ that Saudi Arabia and Billions of $$$ that UAE has provided them against weapons? And yet, Israel can run over both these countries without spending a fraction of what these 2 countries have spent. Basically, it is no secret, Saudi Arabia and UAE invest so massively in US to protect their respective kingdoms.......otherwise, the US would simply introduce democracy, liberty and freedom in these 2 countries.

Around half a trillion dollar worth of defence equipment in 10 years. Thats a lot of R&D jobs in Seattle, San Deigo etc. Good going Trump, he is delivering on his promise to get good deals.

Honestly, why will KSA buy cheap Chinese were when it can get the best from the US of A.

US President Donald Trump described his first day in Saudi Arabia on Saturday as "a wonderful day."

"It was a wonderful day, huge investments in the United States, hundreds of billions of dollars in investments in the United States, jobs, jobs and jobs," Trump said.

After meeting Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz, Trump held a meeting with Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Prince Mohammed bin Nayef.

Earlier in the day, King Salman and President Trump signed an agreement called "Common Strategic Vision" between the two countries at the Al Yamama Palace in Riyadh.

The two leaders signed a number of agreements between the two countries estimated at about 280 billion dollars, which is expected to provide hundreds of thousands of jobs in both countries, but the White House announced earlier that «the value of agreements and memorandums of understanding signed between Riyadh and Washington estimated at 350 billion dollars in 10 Years".

The White House announced earlier today, the defense agreements between the Kingdom and the United States of America worth about 110 billion dollars.

51 companies representing the heart of the US economy participated in the Chief Executives Forum

Saturday May 20, 2017

The US president's visit to Riyadh was accompanied by an important representation of the largest US companies, including major banks such as JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley and Citigroup, with total assets exceeding $ 5 trillion last year, roughly the size of the combined economy of Canada and Germany, for example.

During the historic visit of Donald Trump to Saudi Arabia, the signing of deals and agreements worth hundreds of billions, shows the importance of the economic aspect in the relations between the two parties.

The US delegation is attended by senior executives from the largest investment companies and investment funds in the United States to explore investment opportunities and strengthen the partnership between Saudi Arabia and the United States in vital sectors including oil, gas, aviation, healthcare, technology, manufacturing and infrastructure.

These efforts are aimed at expanding the scope of trade between the two countries to contribute to the localization of jobs and the creation of new jobs in the Kingdom in line with the vision of the Kingdom 2030.

Among the participants are the presidents of the three major US banks, and oil companies, notably ExxonMobil, the world's largest listed oil company by market value of $ 347 billion, and National Oilwell Varco with a market cap of over $ 13 billion.

Four major oil service companies, Baker Hughes, Halliburton, Schlumberger Weather, and Ford, also contributed $ 60 billion in gross revenues last year, equal to the size of Luxembourg's economy.

The largest asset management companies, notably Blackstone Group and CARLYLE Group, which have assets of nearly $ 500 billion, are also in the size of Belgium's economy.

Three summits radiate from Riyadh
Sunday, 21 May 2017
Abdulrahman Gdaia
There is no doubt that US President Donald Trump’s decision to go to Saudi Arabia on his first foreign trip as president adds another dimension to the path of relations between the US and the Saudi kingdom and confirms the special historical relations between the two countries and their people.

It also proves that the strong ties reflect the depth of bilateral relations in the political, military, economic and security fields and indicate an obvious quantum leap.

The visit is marked by three summits - the Saudi-American summit, the Gulf-American summit and the American-Islamic summit.

These meetings will discuss the situation in the region and the destruction it is suffering due to some regional countries’ flagrant interferences and threats to safety and stability.

The three summits indicate a new reality in international relations. This reality helps enhance the level of understanding and embodies the world’s respect for the kingdom and for its leadership and experience in the new era which is characterized with a drive that is based on taking initiatives that maintain Arab and Islamic interests. This drive also represents a new phase that rejects the policy of truces and appeasement.

It is distinguished for the decisive determination of King Salman bin Abdulaziz, may Allah bless him, to protect the security and stability of Arab countries from threats and to strengthen Arab and international solidarity against rogue states that violate international law. This drive also reflects a quantum leap on all levels and embodies a safe approach and the clarity of vision and aims as it looks forward towards a promising future within the national transformation plan and Vision 2030 which have put the kingdom on the path of a new phase to confront economic challenges.

Most important topics
Perhaps one of the most important topics which the leaders in Riyadh will focus on discussing will be negative phenomena and fateful issues that have influenced international peace and stability.

The first of these phenomena which attracted the international community’s attention is related to terrorism. It is one of the major topics during regional, international and bilateral meetings and it has become a major topic on the schedule of international organizations as they seek to find formulas and measures that are more efficient in terms of international cooperation in order to confront or crush terrorism or at least limit its activity via the available local, regional and international tools.

Terrorism is a global phenomenon. Therefore, the entire international community is responsible for combating it as it represents a violent phenomenon that societies have suffered for a long time now.

Terrorism is not limited to a religion or a nationality or an ethnicity or race, and it will continue to further become complicated as international communities develop, particularly following the technological and digital revolution and the emergence of social media.

The kingdom is a leader in solidifying the culture of dialogue and in spreading tolerance and openness among people who love peace and reject terrorism, extremism and racism.

The Saudi kingdom has taken many measures to confront the extremist rhetoric and ideology which justify dangerous phenomena and it did so out of its faith in the significance of confronting them. It is based on this that Saudi Arabia held an international conference in Riyadh in 2005 to confront terrorism and it has resumed its local, regional and international efforts since then.

Intellectual security
On the local level, it adopted the strategy of intellectual security that is based on protection, rehabilitation and aftercare. The Care Rehabilitation Center was established for this purpose.

On the international level, the United Nations Center for Counter-Terrorism was established in 2011 and it was launched through the efforts of Saudi Arabia and its international contribution to fighting terrorist groups. The kingdom has supported this center.

The kingdom has a unique and successful experience in uprooting deviant intellect and extremist Islamic ideology and in standing strong against interfering countries which want to harm Arab states. This is what gained the kingdom its prestigious status in the international arena.

Its efforts via diplomatic framework in mobilizing and intensifying international cooperation and collective work, in enhancing cultural openness and embodying what cultures have in common have shown the kingdom’s leading and efficient role, specifically in terms of the new base of its foreign policy towards strengthening international security and peace.

Wow.....that only solidifies the already strong ties/alliance between both countries.

Moreover, some people here are wrong, KSA will benefit from this deal alot as well. These coming years/decades we can expect to see top notch(the best in the world by a margin) U.S military equipment/weapons being produced in KSA locally, this will help provide much needed skills to Saudi engineers for the future . WIN-WIN for both sides. Very strategic move by the Saudis, well played. :)

Well said, Mike.

Some of the reactions are not really a surprise. It's the usual mixture of envy, ignorance and frustration etc. People commenting without knowing the details thinking that groundbreaking deals of this size and nature are ordinary "we sell you buy" deals. Especially after Saudi Vision 2030 arrived to the scene. It's a waste of time to discuss such issues with people like that.

At one stage KSA empower their people but on other hand they are missing the money
Well, they are still doing far better than many oil/gas and natural resources countries out there . There are many countries out there who have been endowed with as much or if not more natural resources than Saudi Arabia but their people still live in poverty and can't even meet their basic needs leading them to immigrate abroad for asylum or better life . So I'll say the Saudis have at least done well for their citizens who you never see doing menial jobs in the developed world, can't say the same for the vast majority of developing countries.
So we have to always put things into perspective. Saudis and gulf states have done well for their citizens. A quick visit to these countries will confirm that. So won't say they are missing the money(other developing countries are missing far more than them unfortunately.) .:)

Quite a massive deal on the surface... but given the annual expenditure of KSA on defence not that big really.

What would be most interesting is to see how these deals feed into KSA local industry and GDP over the next ten years.
If analysed carefully these deals are more like economic stimulus package instead of standard infrastructure or other types of government spendings.

Hence, KSA is bound to reap benefits from it. It also takes care of many other political issues on international scale.
Looks like a brilliant move by the Saudis to create positive vibe in the US as well...since, many voices were being raised regarding the 911.

Personally, however, I would like to see same strategic movement by the Saudis towards Turkey and Pakistan as well.

At the moment there is no tangible movement in this direction at all by KSA or GCC.

Take for example TFX.

If KSA/GCC joins this program and facilitate Pak's participation as well..then GCC+Turkey+Pak have not only an aircraft but the enitre ecosystem under their control. 10/20 billions spread over ten years... we are talking peanuts here for GCC as collective. Peanuts!

Same goes for naval assets/systems. If only KSA as leader of GCC moves in this direction..the industrial output from these three heartlands will create stability dimensions of its own. Not limited to empolyment alone.

Turks have a very mature naval industrial base..their new sub is going to be some quality product. Also, down the road Turks are going towards destroyers and they Will build an AC!

Of course, US/NATO can be partners in such an undertaking as well.

We must also look at space programs and space assets... if these three important regions combine their resources and build a joint space program...

I bet with Pak's passive SLV program is already into fruition and Turkey's advancement in electronics... imagine... just imagine... the synergy and stability such JVs can create.
Certainly with partnerships with the West and East. 10/20 billions spread over 10/15 years. Peanuts!

GCC+Pak+Turkey can become the Pivot of the World...Capital, manpower and industrial/agricultural base...everything is there.

All that is required is the ink on paper and money in the bank!

Anyhow, the mastermind of this deal is MbS. Credit where it is due.

The King is old and fragile...all strategic decisions are from MbS. He is laying the foundations of a new KSA. We must wish him well...hopefully, after consolidating his support in the West, he moves briskly to make lasting friends in the East as well i.e. Pak-Turk combine.

@cabatli_53 @HAKIKAT @Combat-Master @The SC @MastanKhan @Bubblegum Crisis @Khafee @Kaptaan @Blacklight

Hi,

The Saudis did offer pakistan the deal---" the yemen crisis "----pakistan refused it.

The Saudis / GCC were ready to give the barn lock stock and barrel to pakistan---. Gen Raheel refused it---pakistani parliament refused----.

You know why pak parliament refused it----it will tell you the level of stupidity of the pakistanis---because the Turk parliament had refused the U S for passage during 1st gulf war---Pak parliament wanted to do the same---make a refusal---morons had no clue what would the consequences be and how different the situation was.
