Ex-military officers call for Musharraf to go

Sir,

That post was beautifully expressed. Outstanding.

While every one is fully entitled to his/her views. But to incude Lal Masjid criminals in the list is beyond me.

There is not a single law of the Pakistan penal code that Ghazi brothers didnot breach. They had stored fire arms inside a mosque. They kidnapped people. They burnt government buildings and occupied land and childern's library illegally. They threatened retaliation thru a force of suicide bombers.
They actually fought Pakistan army with firearms for a week and killed many army jawans including a Lt Col. Is this not open rebellion against the sate of Pakistan??. Penalty in any country for rebellion is death. Werent these people given a chance to surrender??

To think that some members of this forum support them?? Who were these Ghazi brothers? They were neither elected representatives nor among the acknowldged Islamic scholars. These were self centred terrorists and killers who wanted to impose their version of Islam by the use of physical force on rest of the population.

Such attitude sickens me. Any country where educated and rational people support out and out rebellion against the state; just because they dont like Musharraf can only go down hill. With friends like these who needs enemies of the state or India to destroy Pakistan.

agreed! and who ordered the re-lease of these lal masjid fanatics, our indomitable CJ. and people in pakistan call him a hero!
makes me doubly sick

The above link is to an Urdu article published in the Irshad Haqqani's coulmn in the Jang of today. This is a letter by a rtd Lt Col Shafqat Kazmi who was a Major in 1988. In this letter he rebutts the claim of of rtd Lt Gen Hamid Gul that Hamid Gul formed Islamic Jamhoori Ittihad ( IJI) on the orders of Gen Aslam Beg and the President Ghulam Ishaq Khan against his conscience.
Hamid Gul has claimed that had he not done so, he was afraid of the dire consequences.

I have always been extremely suspicious of the hypocritical nature of Hamid Gul's charracter. Hamid Gul has been given extra ordinary limelight by the right wing TV anchors in preference to many other former ISI chiefs. IMO if the views of the guest are not to the liking of the TV anchor, he is not invited on the programs such as Capital talk or on the TV shows of Dr Anwar Maqsood.

Coming back to the subject, Col Kazmi has pointed that hundreds of army officers have refused to obey orders against their conscience and only thing that happened to them was that they were retired from service with full pension.

Besides, as head of ISI, Hamid Gul must have been a key man who advised the army chief and the president that PPP is likely to have a landslide victory in the 1988 elections ( it is one of ISI's primary functions) and must have been an active player in the decision to form the IJI. Col Kazmi's letter exposes the moral bankcruptcy of these retired generals.

Regrettably, this also true of the politicians. Prime example is Mr Nawaz Sharif himself. He does not tire of repeating the words " Azaad Adlia" meaning independent judiciary. Truly ironic claim from the man who arranged an attack on the supreme court and then used another retired judge Rafiq Tarar to bribe Saeedu zaman Sidiiqui and thus engineered a revolt by the Justices against the Chief Justice. Being a politician, NS used foxy methods to achieve his objective. End result was however the same; removal of the CJ not your liking.

Fact is that Pakistan's politicians, establishment and the rtd generals; all are opportunists with little moral courage. That unfortunately is the plight of Pakistan.

Several retired officers deny being part of anti-Musharraf resolution

ISLAMABAD, Feb 5 (APP): Some of the retired armed forces officers, who were claimed by the Pakistan Ex-Servicemen Society to have been among the signatories of a resolution urging President Pervez Musharraf to step down, have distanced themselves from the resolution, a newspaper report said. Brig (Retired) Tipu Sultan was quoted by a national daily “Dawn” in its January 24 issue as denouncing the ex-servicemen society.

According to the report, Brig (Retired) Tipu Sultan said most of them had served under military dictatorship and were now posing as democrats. He said their move was meaningless as they were not opinion makers.

Similarly, the report said, another retired officer Rear Admiral Javed Iftikhar said his name was mentioned among the signatories, though he was not even a member of the society.

The report also quoted Rear Admiral Iftikhar as saying that former Army Chief Gen. Aslam Beg and Naval Chief Admiral Iftikhar Sirohey mentioned in the list as signatories were also not present at the meeting.

Earlier, Dawn had also pointed out that the list issued by the society was flawed as former ISI chief Lt. Gen. (retired) Javed Ashraf Qazi, Lt. Gen (retired) Furrukh and Lt. Gen (retired) Qadir Baloch, mentioned in the list, had also not attended the meeting.

These revelations have put the entire exercise on part of the ex- servicemen society, an organisation originally set up for the welfare of retired armed forces personnel, into doubt, the report remarked.

Memon warns ex-servicemen, media to behave
Calls deposed chief justice a security risk

HYDERABAD: Caretaker Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Nisar Memon has asked ex-servicemen and media to remain within their limits, otherwise action could be taken against them, Geo News reported.
He said any channel that will violate code of conduct would be closed down.

Agencies add: He said ex-servicemen society was a welfare body, as such it should concentrate on welfare of retired servicemen. He said if they were so anxious to indulge in politics, they should enter into it lawfully.

The minister said this during inauguration of Sindhi Service of the state news agency at a local hotel, and later talking to newsmen at Circuit House and at the Press Club on Saturday.

He said President Musharraf was elected with a heavy mandate and un-elected ex-servicemen were polluting the environment of free elections through their irresponsible statements.

He said the ex-servicemen should form a political party before “claiming or demanding” anything. He said the constitution allowed them full freedom to form a political party. He castigated ‘elements’ for trying to create a situation right in the middle of the election process.

Nisar Memon claimed President Musharraf has given freedom to the media, adding earlier it had been working under black laws of General Ayub Khan era.

He said the present government has also made Radio Pakistan, PTV and APP free, which are now giving full coverage to all political parties.

He said at present there were 80 private TV channels and 106 private radio stations working independently.

He said foreign media was trying to tarnish the image of Pakistan through wrong propaganda. He said he was happy that the Pakistani media was replying to them in a befitting manner to prove that the media in Pakistan was free.

The minister said that the foreign visit of President Musharraf was successful. He said the president convinced the Western leaders that the elections would be free, fair and transparent.

He said the caretaker government was not interfering in the election process and would hand over power to the party winning a majority.

He termed the assassination of PPP leader Benazir Bhutto a great tragedy. He said Benazir’s murder investigation was being carried out by Scotland Yard and Pakistani police.

He said President Musharraf paid homage to her by declaring three-day official mourning.

To a question, Nisar Memon called deposed and detained Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry a security risk.

He said the retired chief justice would remain under ‘protection’, until he gives an assurance that he would not create security problems.

He said whenever a country adopted an independent foreign policy it was subjected to external pressures, which was what was being faced by Pakistan.

To a question about nuclear technology, he said journalists and the media had already been briefed about the issue and should be assured that nuclear assets were in safe and sound command and control custody.

He denied having any information about President Musharraf’s alleged meeting with the Israeli defence minister, and also expressed his ignorance about a number of cases and persons against whom FIRs had been registered for riots in the wake of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination.
