ANKARA/ISTANBUL (Reuters) - President Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday Turkey will continue to retaliate after Syrian government shelling killed four of its troops and wounded nine in Syria's northwest Idlib region, where Turkish forces have bulked up in recent days.

Erdogan said initial indications show 30-35 Syrians were "neutralized" in Turkey's response to what the government called intense shelling of its soldiers. He said Turkey has told Russian counterparts "they need to stand aside" in the escalating conflict.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces, backed by Russian air power, have recently made advances in Idlib, prompting Turkey to warn it may launch a military operation there unless the fighting is halted.

"We have responded in kind to these attacks and will continue to do so, whether it is with our artillery or mortars," Erdogan told reporters in Istanbul.

"We are determined to continue our operations for the security of our country, people and our brothers in Idlib," he said. "Those who question our determination will soon understand they made a mistake."

A Turkish security official told Reuters that the shelling which killed the soldiers occurred in the area of Saraqeb town, 15 km (9 miles) to the east of Idlib city.

"Following the developments in Idlib in recent weeks, serious support was provided over the weekend to the troops, equipment and vehicles in the region," the official said.

The Idlib region is the last major rebel-held stronghold in Syria's nearly nine-year-old war and Erdogan accuses Russia of violating agreements to reduce the fighting in the region, a charge which Moscow denied on Friday.

Turkey, which already hosts 3.6 million refugees from Syria, fears a fresh wave of migrants from Idlib. It has 12 military observation posts around the region, set up under a 2017 agreement with Russia and Iran. Several of them have since been surrounded by advancing Syrian government forces.

REINFORCEMENTS

A spokesman for Erdogan's AK Party said Turkey will view Syrian government forces around the observation posts in the region as "targets".

The Syrian Observatory, a UK-based war monitor, said some 320 Turkish trucks and military vehicles entered Idlib at Kafr Lusin crossing on Sunday, much more than usual, and went south.

Turkey's defense ministry said Syrian shelling was carried out against its reinforcements, which were meant to prevent clashes in Idlib, despite prior coordination of their positions.

Erdogan said if talks between diplomats and generals fail to get results he will contact Russian President Vladimir Putin directly to try to resolve the situation.

"We told especially Russian counterparts that they are not our counterparts here, that it is the (Syrian) regime directly, and that they need to stand aside," Erdogan said. "This is not okay, we are giving martyrs here, but our armed forces and our artillery... are keeping them under fire."

He added F-16s are involved in Turkey's operation against 40 points in Idlib.

Russia's TASS news service said no air strikes were carried out in the fighting.

The U.S. special envoy for Syria said on Thursday the Idlib fighting raised the specter of an international crisis.

Who in their right mind in Turkey thaught the Syrians alongside the Russians could be trusted ? @Ansu fati @Nein @GlobalMillitary96 @HannibalBarca

The Turkish military seem totally helpless as Assad/Russia/Iran are leading a full assault on Idlib,Turkish outposts are being encircled and now attacked. As always some Turkish artillery strikes from there to there, some meetings and phone calls and nothing else.

The reality on the ground is Assad/Russia/Iran are about 10+ kms from Idlib with the prospect of millions of refugees flooding Turkey and no one seem able to stop them. Either Turkey hits the table with their fists, either they are doomed.

Erdogan's retarded policies led to all of this. The sooner we get rid of him the better. He needs to go. There is rumours that there is unrest in the military over this leadership. Hopefully they hang Erdoğan and all of AKP. The only people that should be spared are Selcuk Bayraktar, Ibrahim Kalin, Mevlut Cavusoglu and Binali Yildirim (purely because he's a meme).

Only stupid idiots and burthurrt losers can dreaming about leaving of Turkish Forces in Idlib

This is pure bullshit. Its not the Armed Forces fault. Its the Erdoğans fault. Without any kind of protection he set up those outposts and people warned him left and right. Guess what ? They were right. For some reason he cant think long term. I call this long term disaster miyopathi.

Man I just want us to hit them with heavy weapons and air strikes. I'm sick and tired of soldier's in Kirpi's heading straight into the middle of conflict zones and dying for no reason at all. Patrols and guarding observation points just doesn't work. It's stupid. We've lost way more soldiers in periods of "peace" then in the actual operations.

Honestly we need a Yavuz Sultan Selim, Genghis Khan or a bloody Timur.

If we want to strike our enemies and make them fear us. The problem is do Turks have this will???

6 Turkish soldiers have been martyred and the enemies are celebrating just that. Turkish man are you ready to wake up?

All over facebook I saw the typical "Rabbim" post and "vatan sagolson"...

These people are asleep. They don't care anymore. Soldier deaths are just accepted as normal and oh it doesn't matter because they're going to heaven... Let's just sacrifice hundreds of more soldier's in useless patrols. But it's all good because you said Yuce Rabbim blah blah blah.

I really feel for the families and the soldiers themselves. In ancient Turk culture dying in battle is the greatest honor. But we're just sending them to stand there and wait to get killed.

Meanwhile Erdoğan sits in his palace and sips water from his $1000 cups.

If we kill at least 300 enemies in the next 3 days I will chop my ear off.

We became desensitised thats why. Because us the citizens never questioned our government whoever it is regardless if it is akp, chp and mhp.

The real question is where are the victories and where is the spoils of war???

We have to ask ourselves where are the victories??? Our ancestors always asked if there is no victories then there is no point in living.

Us Turks just dont have that hunger for victory.
