It's not directly comparable indeed but no self-respecting Syrian or Arab would accept annexation by foreigners. Most Syrians (including anti-Al-Assad Syrians) are against such a thing. Those living next to or in conflict zones prefer stability above anything else (naturally) but once peace emerges they will not accept such policies nor should they.
Proxies, sure. Just like almost all the fighting was done by Syrians. However it is a slippery route, I am sure that you understand my "concerns".
So far we witness this only in the West Bank and Golan. By Israel which is the favorite child of the US/West and is armed with 300 nuclear weapons. As long as Israel is the extension of the US, nothing can really be done to change status quo in the West Bank and Golan heights militarily.
What is peace in Syria? For ASSad is to retake all of it... that's his peace.
For other Syrians outside of ASSad reign... is to be as far as possible from ASSad and affiliate.
Therefore those of Great Idlib and Northern Syria... Being ONE with ASSad is a no no... Same for YPG Side in the East... They will seek some Autonomy aka Kurds in Iraq ... Where ASSad have almost no power upon...
With those Conditions, they will be no peace in Syria, Syrians who are far from ASSad, are ok to either be "Independent" or to be part of another country aka Turkey. If nothing is resolved in the End (By ASSad End per exemple).
So, if those Syrians could find a future of peace/stability and security, where their rights is equal to another lambda citizen, then Annexation Or not, I don't really care, Whatever that piece of land is under another country or they begun to be Turkified or whatever... In the End, they are still "Muslims" and "Safe", That's what they care.
As for Israel... the "Situation" is similar than under crusaders rule of Jerusalem... Where each Muslim statlet around it behaved like today... Till someone said "F*ck you" and just went in ... Starting by those same "Statelet".
Arab countries believe that they have more to gain in letting the US-IS doing as they wish, than facing it with whatever "power" they've got. (And yes they've got power to tilt the balance, yes they do, and quite a lot of it)
And the paradox is in your own "words" you asked Syrians to sacrifice for something While Arabs "political sys'" in general in the region, let go of the Jerusalem problem...
In the End, Human Life is a circle... Each one of us will be faced by the same Problems as our forefathers and will be held accountable for our answers of those same problems.
The region has just begun his transformation... Revos are actually nothing in comparison to what will happen, the real storm is coming... You should read some Post and Pre crusades commentary from writers of that time...you will be surprised to see how similar we are, whatever in personality/moral and situation.
