well, there is goverment instutue called DIB (Diyanet işleri Başkanlıgı- Religious Affairs adm) in Turkey, they licked his ...ss after this statement(it is normal because goverment pay for those scums) . But normal religious people didnt like it, even many people dont aware of what he said. They(AKP) suddenly shut this subject (because of fear public reaction). probabaly in near future they will bring this subject again (they always do with controversial subjects)
Erdogan: Islam needs to be updated. You cannot apply Islam with laws from 14 centuries ago.

It is not about the essence of Islam, but about correcting the deterioration in the our period. The social order and espcially role of women in the years of prosperity(asrı saadet) , still far ahead from todays many islamic countries. Our Beloved Prophet Mehemmed (sav)'s wife Hz. Hatice was a respectable merchant in the society. One of the most important issues facilitating the entry of the Turks into Islam and Building cultural bonds was the value given to women. But over the years, the people of the some tribes began to have influence their old culture into Islam.
In our countries, there are very valuable theology faculties and academicians working on these subjects. If we cannot find the courage to bring these social problems to a common perspective within the Islamic law, we cannot remain strong in the struggle against radicalism in our religion.

This is what Erdogan has been trying to lobby for a while now. He publicly urged mosques to open their doors to women a few weeks ago. Of course the religious people reacted rabidly. A stupid example:

Now I dont know how far Erdogan wants this gender mixing to go ahead. I for one would like to see women and men doing their praying near one another. But Erdogan might just want the women do their praying behind the men, but still in the same area.
I dont think that would be a huge improvement of course.
But islam indeed needs a lot of reforming if it wants to remain existing further into this century and forward.
