It really is a matter of perspective than. What you are referring to as the war of independence of Turkey is remembered as the Jihad of Turkey by our ancestors my grandfather's elder brother actually went to fight along the Turk Mujahideen, never returned, not news ever came.
Every one in the family is proud of the Mujahid.
So, for our ancestors, it was a matter of religious affiliation with the Turks along with cultural one too (many families in Pakistan are of Turkic origin) but it was religion mainly.
