One noob thought.

If this coalition of 10 states inc Pakistan and Turkey starts to function and evolves into a regional NATO, keeping that in mind, Pakistan must seek assurances that when India looks into Pakistan, the coalition must look back. It will solve our conventional disparity dillema with India when these states would stand by us in the time of need.

Another thought is that if Iran becomes the regional bulldog as the US recedes, its chances of aligning with Pakistan vs India must be weighed. Let me remind you that during the stand off with India in early 2000's, Pr Rafsanjani chose to be the chief guest at India's republic day parade.

Whatever we do, we must make sure this budding coalitiin returns the favor to Pakistan when we need it. Our contribution ought to be in lights of such commitments.

I seriously doubt any of the country would even think of going against India. You are used by Saudis. And in the process making Iran your enemy. Now you will two enemies on either side of your borders. What kind of strategy is this?

@Icarus how much chances are there..tht our role will be limited to training / observer status only or our troops /airforce being actively engaged in this conflict? Which scenario is more probable..(as u have been part of discussions)u think? Only if Saudi Arabia is attacked..then for its defence..i say ..our troops should be actively engaged..othwerise in offensive roleim yemen, as is the case , right now..our troops shouldnt be engaged..but rather be limited to training / observer status

if Saudi taraorry violated Pakistan will strongly respond defense minister

There is a difference between the Zaidi Shia and the mainstream 'Twelver' Shia. So that is only partially true for the Houthis.

But Iran is openly condemning this Sunni-allied invasion of Yemen! Of course they care about Houthis.

This should be brought up in Parliament though.

The meeting was attended by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Adviser to Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, Army Chief General Raheel Sharif and Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman. -PM House

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif asserted that any threat to Saudi Arabia’s territorial integrity would evoke a strong response from Pakistan.

This was said by Nawaz while chairing a high-level meeting at the PM House to discuss recent developments in the Middle East and to examine Saudi Arabia's request to join the Gulf-led operation against Houthi rebels in Yemen, said a statement issued by PM House on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Adviser to Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, Army Chief General Raheel Sharif and Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman.

Nawaz said Pakistan enjoys close and brotherly relations with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and attaches great importance to their security.

The participants of the meeting decided that a high-level delegation will visit Saudi Arabia on Friday to assess the situation. Khawaja Asif, Sartaj Aziz along with senior representatives from the armed forces will be part of the delegation in this regard, the statement added.

Earlier, the Foreign Office said Pakistan was examining Saudi Arabia's request.

Sartaj Aziz confirmed that top Saudi officials had contacted the Pakistani leadership requesting it to join the Yemen operation. A decision has not yet been taken, Aziz said.

He further said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had summoned a high-level meeting this evening to consult his close aides over the matter.

Earlier during the day, Foreign Office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam told reporters at the weekly media briefing in Islamabad that Saudi Arabia had contacted Pakistan on an emergency basis and extended the invitation to join the operation against Houthi rebels in Yemen.

She did not specify the details of the request made by Saudi Arabia to Pakistan but said that the matter was being examined.

Aslam said that the Pakistani mission in Yemen has been placed on alert and has been asked to keep in touch with the Pakistan community residing there.

"The Pakistani community has been asked to be ready for possible evacuation," she further said.

The Foreign Office spokesperson said that no decision has been made by Islamabad with regard to closing its mission in Sanaa.

Diplomatic sources told DawnNews that a top Saudi functionary has contacted the top leadership of Pakistan over telephone and sought Pakistan's cooperation in the offensive launched in Yemen.

Although Pakistani authorities have given a hint of cooperation, they told the Saudis that a final decision will be take after consulting the military.

Sources also said the Pakistan permanent mission to UN is also being briefed on this latest crisis.

Saudi Arabia and Gulf region allies launched military operations including air strikes in Yemen on Thursday, Saudi officials said, to counter Iran-allied forces besieging the southern city of Aden, where the US-supported Yemeni president had taken refuge.

Gulf broadcaster al-Arabiya TV reported that the kingdom was contributing as many as 150,000 troops and 100 warplanes to the operations and that allies Egypt, Jordan, Sudan and Pakistan were ready to take part in a ground offensive in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia's SPA state news agency later said that five Muslim countries including Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Sudan want to participate in the Gulf-led military coalition against Shia Houthi rebels in Yemen.

They have “expressed desire to participate in the operation” against the rebels, which the kingdom dubbed “Firmness Storm”, the state news agency further said.

These latest developments follow a southward advance by Houthi militants, who are said to be backed by Iran, who took control of the capital Sanaa in September and seized the central city of Taiz at the weekend as they move closer to the new southern base of US-backed President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

Iran condemns assault
The Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned on Thursday the military operation by Saudi Arabia and its Gulf Arab allies in Yemen, state television reported.

It gave no further details.

Iran denies providing money and training to the Shia Houthi militia in Yemen, as claimed by some Western and Yemeni officials.

After a speical meeting with with Army and Air Chief its decided that Defense Minister and Adviser on Foreign Affairs are going KSA

So whats the 'pro-intervention' camp arguing about ? I'm sure financial incentives aren't really at the top of the list because our high command can't really be oblivious to what happened the last few times we helped the Arabs out and no amount of money can offset the potential mess that we had to clear up (and we're still doing); namely a never ending and utterly needless rivalry with Israel (Arab-Israeli wars) and the Iranian Ayatollahs and the Saudi Clerics sparring with each other while using their Pakistani bearded baboons of choice who's Qiblahs are either towards Tehran or towards Riyadh.

So essentially whats the top 2-3 reasons as to why we're taking this step ?

For now, we are taking no step and there are no agendas. At this moment, we have only decided that we support the Saudi standing on the issue and will not assume a position of neutrality, as I would have preferred. I cannot divulge the exact reasons and the people behind them but most are of a strategic nature, aimed at preempting and containing a potential sectarian conflict that has all tendency to spread, especially in nations that have already been a flash point for sectarian violence.

Expecting common sense from pro-Saudi Pakistanis is insane.

They're bound to, it challenges their aspirations in the region.

Let them fight. Why you guys want to get involved. You are fighting 15 years long war with Taliban. So much blood has been spilled. You are broke. Do you require more bloodshed.

Is Iran attacking Saudi Arabia from thousands of miles away? :D
Why do Saudis believe Iran is a threat?
they are supporting houthis ,they fear houthi rebellion will cause unrest in their eastern province thus creating chaos inside the Kingdom
and by looking at the track record of both nations its bound to happen so saudi actions are logical
but we shoudnt involve ourselves in this conflict

There is a difference between the Zaidi Shia and the mainstream 'Twelver' Shia. So that is only partially true for the Houthis.

Huge difference in fact; the Zaidis are closer to Sunnis than they are to Twelver Shias heck Zaidis even follow Fiqh-i-Hanfia and not Fiqh-i-Jaffriya ! So far as I know some minor disagreements about the succession issue is all they have and they don't even perceive the first 3 caliphs in a negative light at all.

Honestly... what's Pakistan doing there??? Houthis are not a threat to KSA's security... Kingdom's security can be taken care of by themselves as of now... Pakistanis meddling in this issue for some gifts from KSA only going to affect pakistan's internal security... Seems Pakistan has not learned its lessons...don't wage wars for others
