Ziraat receives bank license in Azerbaijan

The Turkish state-run Ziraat Bank has been granted a banking license by the Central Bank of Azerbaijan, marking its entrance into the lucrative market.

The banking sector in Azerbaijan experienced high growth rates in 2013, according to a report released by the World Bank in October 2014.

However, Azerbaijan’s financial penetration indicator remains one of the lowest inEurope and Central Asia, the report said, and this offers a clear market opportunity for Ziraat Bank.

The Turkish bank employs more than 24,000 people in 1700 branches. There are 57 branches in foreign countries such as Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, Russia, the U.K., the U.S., Georgia, Bulgaria and Greece.

Separately, on Oct.15 of this year, Ziraat Bank received permission from the Turkish banking regulator to establish a bank working on Islamic financial principles.

The Central Bank of Azerbaijan is continuing its reform of the sector, recently introducing a new legal and regulatory framework for consumer protection and financial literacy, as well as risk-based supervision, according to the World Bank report.

A Russian company is in talks to order at least 30 ships from shipyards in Russia and Azerbaijan.

Arnold Ivanov, CEO of Industrial and Ecological Alliance (IEA), said his operation has signed a preliminary agreement with Russian yard Krasnoye Sormovo for 20 ships.

These are split between river-sea tankers of up to 8,000 dwt and bulkers of up to 7,000 dwt.

"We plan to build about 30 ships within our project on restoration of river navigation between Baltic, Caspian and Azov seas with the cost of $833m (including $540m for the fleet building)," he told the Fineko news agency.

Construction will take three and a half years, with the vessels costing $15.5m each.

Some work - as much as 40% - looks likely to be sub-contracted out to the new Baku Shipyard Company (BSC) in Azerbaijan, however.
This yard could also win a deal from IEA for between 10 and 15 specialised containerships for use in the Caspian region.

Ivanov added: "We have already raised a loan from Beirut branch of Lloyd Banking Group for this purpose. Financing has been already opened and it will allow us to start building of the first tanker not later than in December, though earlier we planned to do it in 2015."

He claimed to have a preliminary deal in place with Rosneft to use the vessels.

BSC is a $450m yard owned 65% by state oil company Socar, 25% by Azerbaijan Investment Company (AIC) and 10% by Singapore’s Keppel group.

Earlier this year, it signed a deal with Socar for 10 high-speed crew boats.

May be President Aliyev should be made a God of Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijan has became single party state with a dictator and his family controlling lucrative businesses. All these elite projects wasting money while people are cowered and the independent press is attacked. RFE/RL offices were ransacked by police and journalist were interrogated. Azerbaijan created Iran as a enemy when they need friends against Armenian occupation of Azeri lands. Azerbaijan has been cooperating with Israel against Iran.

Azerbaijan's first Presedent Abulfaz Elchibey expressed irredentist sentiments and promoted the idea of a ‘Greater Azerbaijan,’ which would unite Azerbaijan (the country) and Azerbaijan (the region in northwest Iran). It was Elchibey who instead of creating 'Greater Azerbaijan' made Iran an enemy and lost 20% of Azeri territory to Armenia.
