Dubai Airshow 2017: Atlas Aerospace expects opportunity from French focus
12th November 2017 - 03:11 GMT | by Richard Thomas in Dubai

France’s interest in developing its civil and military markets in the UAE is helping companies like Abu Dhabi-based Atlas Aerospace explore new business opportunities in the aerospace sector.

Over $1 billion dollars of commercial and military deals were agreed between the countries during the visit to the UAE by President Emmanuel Macron last week, while French companies are keeping a noticeably high profile at the Dubai Air Show.

Officials at Atlas Aerospace told Shephard that the hope and expectations were that such visits would help it develop its markets in both the military and commercial aviation sectors.

The company adopted the latest arm of its business structure to focus on the aerospace support and logistics market, complementing existing operations in areas such as perimeter security and secure communications.

‘When someone sells equipment [to the UAE] we can install it. France is a very strong ally of the UAE,’ said Imad Lahoud, COO at Atlas Aerospace.

Much of its work involves assisting the UAE armed forces with the installation and modification of mission systems and C2, while a contract award earlier this year saw it confirmed to install cockpit voice recorders and flight data systems to more than 50 aircraft.

It has also expanded its footprint into other Middle Eastern countries such as Egypt.

Atlas’ presence at the show would enable officials to speak to both existing clients as well as future prospects, according to Lahoud. Officials would not be drawn into disclosing as to whether any deals could be confirmed, although announcements could be made later in the week.

During the Dubai Airshow, Atlas Aerospace will feature its first next–generation universal flight simulator, a fully digital training device; the rotary-wing Caledonian Scorpio Mission System; and Harris Multi-channel Airborne Networking Radio.

The company will also put on display the Harris RF-7850A-UA Unmanned Aircraft Networking Radio; as well as the Sea Venom/ANL (pictured) the new generation, lightweight, medium range anti-ship missile developed by MBDA for shipborne helicopters.

A group of interns concluding their degree-level studies in aeronautical engineering recently spent one-week in France with companies such as Airbus and MBDA looking at flight and productions lines, and will be brought into Atlas Aerospace as the company expands its operations.

Dubai Airshow 2017: Calidus showcases B-250

12th November 2017 - 10:11 GMT | by Helen Haxell in Dubai

RSS
UAE-based company Calidus has unveiled for the first time its new light attack aircraft, the B-250, with multirole capabilities at Dubai Airshow 2017 on 12 November.

The B-250 has been part of the Bader programme that originated in 2015 with a range of partners including Brazilian company Novaer, the provider of the aircraft's structure, and Rockwell Collins, the manufacturer of the onboard avionics system with its Pro Line Fusion technology.

The aircraft is the first military fighter to be developed in the country and was a result of a capability gap, Hamdan Abdulla Al Shkeili, chief software engineer at Calidus, explained to Shephard. The first delivery of the aircraft is expected imminently.

‘Today we are introducing our project the B-250. It has very strong, cutting edge avionics to enable the aircraft to do its missions accurately and precisely,’ he said.

The Pro Line Fusion avionics suite will have graphical interfaces that are integrated with a digital HUD and multi-function display windows. Terrain awareness and EO/IR video displays are also expected to provide pilots with greater air space awareness.

The single/dual pilot aircraft’s mission capabilities will be centred around counter insurgency, ISR, close air support and advanced training operations.

In relation to the weapon capabilities, the B-250 can an array of weapons with capacity for seven munitions as well as an EO/IR.

‘It is designed to be flexible for end users. It can carry different kinds of weapons and rockets. It is fulfilling a gap that the market is needing for modern warfare with very low operational costs,’ Al Shkeili commented.

He explained further that the company is receiving a lot of domestic and international interest in the B-250 and ‘active communication’ is currently taking place with end users.

Novaer developed the aircraft’s structure which comprises of carbon fibre which was a key requirement from Calidus due to its lightweight capabilities.

‘It has outstanding performance due to the fact that it is the first aircraft in this category to be totally made of carbon fibre. Carbon fibre means it has better weight and anti-fatigue [components] which gives the aircraft more lifetime,’ Al Shkeili said.

The production facility for the aircraft is in the early stages of development and will be located in Al Ain although Al Shkeili confirmed that there is an opportunity for a ‘very high production’ at the site.

At this stage, the B-250 has flown more than 50 flight hours. According to reports, it is believed that in the summer of this year the first prototype of the aircraft undertook its first engine spin.

Currently, there are two aircraft at the show one on static and one participating in the flight display. There was no further confirmation on any other B-250s at this stage.

It utilises one 1,600shp P&WC PT6A-68 engine and the B-250’s maximum payload is 1,796kg. the aircraft’s service ceiling is 30,000ft with a range of 2,400nm at 301kt.

Looks like another excellent option for low-cost, cretin crunching operations.

One of them is probably Abramovich with his Eclipse. Maybe he's thinking of replacing the two helicopters, the mini sub for escaping and the missile defense system he has in his Yacht. :-)

Airbus displays comprehensive range of weapons for armed C295

Airbus Defence and Space is showcasing its new C295 Armed ISR (Intelligence Surveillance & Reconnaissance) version at the Dubai Airshow. A C295 is exhibited on static display flanked by a wide range of weapons which have been selected to be integrated onto this versatile platform.

The company has signed a series of agreements with air-to-surface weapon suppliers paving the way for flight-trials to qualify their products to equip the C295.

Since the previously announced memorandum of understanding with Roketsan of Turkey, similar arrangements have been reached with Expal, Escribano and Equipaer of Spain, as well as Rheinmetall of Germany, and the US suppliers Nobles Worldwide and US Ordnance.

Aircraft have already been delivered to an unidentified customer including two 12.7mm light machine guns and mounts, supplied by Nobles Worldwide and US Ordnance, to be mounted in the paratroop side doors.

The next weapon to undergo airborne carriage trials is planned to be Roketsan’s L-UMTAS anti-tank missile. Roketsan is also providing the Cirit laser-guided missile and Teber-82 laser bomb-guidance kit.

Rheinmetall’s BK 27 autocannon provides a heavier door-mounted option, targeted by Escribano’s Door Gun System.. Expal is displaying its CAT-70 (2.75 inch) rockets and Mk 82 warhead, and Equipaer has its CAT 70 Multiple Rocket Launcher in the exhibition.

Head of Military Aircraft Fernando Alonso said: “The development of further applications for the C295, as well as our other aircraft, is a key element of our strategy for the future. The remarkable flexibility designed into the C295 makes it a superb platform for a wide range of mission-specific configurations.”
