@ Lankan Ranger : How is the profitability of Sri Lankan (Airlines)? Asking this because our Biman Bangladesh is running out of ways to make losses. :D

Their biggest mistake was leasing that 747 for Hajj flights. And that didn't go well for the young airline. They thought they can make easy bucks of out that :cheesy:

Rule #1: Always make aircraft choices for which you can afford and that yield high returns on investment. And that way, profitable.

No profit = dead.

Yep, there's no room for error on the private airline market

I dont think GMG will be dead soon. They have a decent fleet. They again bought another Boeing 767 in 2010. They could not withstand rising fuel price in 2008-9 but should be back to normal now.

On 1 May 2010, GMG Airlines initiated their new logo and livery with their newly acquired Boeing 767-300ER.[5] After the rebranding, the main body of the planes are white. A small bit of the engine are imprinted with colorful butterfly wings. The tail is also partially embedded with the colorful wings of a butterfly. On the nose, behind the cockpit the new logo of GMG airlines appears Near the Gtail, the link to the GMG Airlines official website is given.

Sri Lankan Airlines now making operational profits

Sri Lankan Airlines is now making operational profits and this trend would continue said Sri Lankan Airlines Chairman Nishantha Wickramasinghe. Speaking at the Pro Surf Championships here he said that one of the main reasons for this is the ‘oil factor’ which is at manageable levels and also prudent management tools that were implemented recently.

He said at times they were purchasing fuel at around $ 140 a barrel and today this has come down to an average of around $ 100 which he said was good.

He said the airline is also maintaining 89% cabin factor which too has helped the airline to make operational profits. “Globally, the airline industry operates on thin margins.” said the Chairman and identified China, the Far East and India as their best routes.

The Sri Lankan government bought back the 43.6 percent stake Emirates Airline held on Sri Lankan for US $ 55 million last year.

How cheap!!! Its not even half the price of a aircraft. YOu guys rob the hell out of Emirates.. LOL

Good job...

@Lanka,

I think Boeing is a better choice than Airbus.. Look at our 737

SriLankan wooed by Boeing

With business booming for SriLankan from increased tourist and other arrivals to the country, aircraft manufacturers aggressively peddling their merchandise in Colombo and the frontrunner this time is America’s Boeing.

The Nation learns that a Boeing sales team from Seattle had made a convincing sales pitch for its proven workhorse 777 as the ideal aircraft for the national carrier last month.

Strangely Boeing new 787 ‘Dreamliner,’ which is considered the most economical aircraft, had not been included in the sales pitch due to massive delivery delays and backlog of orders.

Call me what ever but I am sticking to Emirates man.

I am not interested to accommodate Bd's air hostess nekrami. If you get my drift. :disagree:

However, very encouraging though.

Agree with you bro there is no sane reason why anyone should fly Bangladeshi airlines unless its within the country in which case it has to be a Regent no brainer. But i hear Biman really improved their service with their new Boeing Aircrafts.

I hope so. These new aircrafts require professonal minded people to improve the image of Biman. Any ETA when NY to Dhaka will reinstate?

Until and unless the ownership is not sold to a private concern or the management is not done by some other private airlines company without interference from political goons, it is almost sure that Biman Bangladesh will never make profits. Same goes with Bangladesh Railways. The GoB is worried it will not get any profits from these concerns without them being in charge works as a boomerang. The hope of getting profits always remain unfulfilled when the notoriously inefficient BD bureaucrats are at the top.

With a private professional management team at top, BB can make a good profit and will be able to pay the money to Boeing for purchasing ten jets without asking the govt for a bail out. It will be able to pay taxes on net profits to the govt. But, anyway, BD bureaucratic and political tangling will not allow the airlines to be taken over and managed by a private company.
