DRDO says it has capability to produce VVIP choppers

I think everyone is being a little unfair here. My first reaction on seeing the headline was -"Great! Let the DRDO build coppers for the VIP's". I read the piece only to realise that Saraswat was asked a question by stupid journalists & he answered in the only way it can be answered. Notice that he said that it would be pointless for the DRDO to invest money making choppers for VIP's which would be limited in number required, he also pointed out that it was foolish in this day & age to try & do everything in house. I think that was the most encouraging comment from him so far & whatever his unnecessary tall talk elsewhere, this wasn't one of them.

This is the reason why India is not an exporter of weapons like Isreal, Russia, China and America. We only consider products for the domestic market. Never for the international market. These defence PSU don't even prolly know what the hell is going on in the international defence marker. We need private sector badly right now.

It was, because he claimed we can develop something like the AW101 today, which is not the case! We have developed Dhruv with a lot of help and guidance by foreign partners, but HAL is currently developing the LUH alone and even that will take years to be finished, so how on earth can he claim such BS just to fool the public about the indigenous capability and fuel the current media hype about the AW 101 case?
He simply should have admitted that we can't at the moment and then could have explained that it wouldn't be worth it either, but he didn't! Instead he made just a populist statement, which is great when you are a politician and want to fool the mass to vote for you.

This is the DRDO trolling. To meet this requirement DRDO would first have to develop the IMRH. This project is a decade atleast away. The VVIP of the ALH is neither here nor there as it doesn't fit the requirements.

Time to allow domestic private players in. Why is there such a wall against such?

But will our bloody politicos agree? There's more slush money to be had in kickbacks from foreign firms! :cheesy:

There is no wall against it, but you have to think about it realistically, otherwise you will end up like Mr Saraswat, living the dream of we can do it all and if we can't f... it, we simply stick to the next project, since nobody will take us accountable for what we claim.

We have to develop as much as WE CAN indigenously, but since we CAN'T do much as of now, we have to get a midway by using JVs and co-developments.

Actually he answers the thing. Can DRDO build. yes. but is it worth building now for a small number and since they are busy designing other helicopters. May be not. why take up too many projects together and later fire the design team or find other work for them.
Once LCH starts induction and LUH reaches TD next project for them would be IMRH design. They wouldn't waste the design team developed for ALH, LCH and LUH.

There is a related story with respect to "competency" of our Govt aided organizations in Monopoly sectors. Till not so long ago, the only large scale steam turbine manufacturer in India was BHEL. Now without a steam turbine and generator, there would be no powerplant. After 1991 liberalization, Indian power sector started to grow far more rapidly and later Private companies were also given free hand to establish power plants. however corresponding freedom was not given to other industries to manufacture turbines and generators. As a result, BHEL became (along with monopoly) a Bottleneck.
Later private players started buying Turbines from China which were way cheaper and far better time schedules.
Now compare this with our defence sector companies. Government over the years have protected them by not allowing anyone else in the field thereby creating lazy fat elephants. Now today armed forces are facing the same condition that powerplant setting companies faced ie either persist with them or look for imports.
I'm not against HAL/DRDO/ADA etc they have their fair share of sucess but it is in interest of government to allow competition (even if limited). Once a company knows there is going to be one more bid in tender apart from its own, complacency automatically vanishes.

My friend, he is not trolling, merely stating that DRDO has the capability to develop such platforms. Later in the article, he also states that since we have the capability that does not mean we start building everything in house and that too for a meager demand of 10-15 platforms that would be wastage.

This is one thing where I totally agree with DRDO. Make an ammendment in constitution that mandates that VVIPS can travel only in indigenous helicopters aka our DRDO made helicopters. Our 'VVIPs' will know how much risk they are putting our soldiers to. And they will kick DRDO's butt to make things better.

.
The funny thing is, DRDO would have nothing to do with it, because HAL would develop the IMRH! Just shows that V K Saraswat is the biggest show off that we have in the Indian industry and that he don't misses any chance to get infront of the media and claim BS.

Sancho, Do you not think that HAL and DRDO don't have the capability to produce a VVIP chopper?

As I said, DRDO has nothing to do with, other than providing some minor systems for it and HAL is not able to do such a project at the moment alone. That's why they proposed the IMRH development to the government, but were searching for international partners as well. Till now, neither a partner was found, nor does it seems that this version will be build, since IAF is integrating more Mi 17s and IN will purely go for foreign helicopters now.
