DRDO hopes to test fly hypersonic plane by early next year

BANGALORE (BNS): DRDO expects to test fly India’s indigenous hypersonic technology demonstrator vehicle (HSDTV) by early next year, the defence agency’s Chief V K Saraswat said Friday.

“We have conducted ground testing of the vehicle for nearly 20 seconds. It has performed well. We are hopeful to flight test it by early next year at Mach 6-7 speed,” Saraswat told reporters during Aero India 2011.

“India has been working on the technology demonstration project for the last five to six years. Only the US and Australia have expertise in this area in the world,” the DRDO chief said.

The highly ambitious HSDTV programme involves the development of a hypersonic plane that would travel six to seven times faster than the speed of sound. It would attain autonomous scramjet flight for 20 seconds, using a solid rocket launch booster.

While the stated objective of the programme is to reduce the cost of putting payloads in outer space, it could eventually lead to India building a highly powerful hypersonic cruise missile system for its defence forces.

DRDO, which has in the past conducted extensive research and trials for the programme in India and abroad, had earlier targeted to flight test the vehicle in 2008. But the time scheduled spilled to the end of 2010.

A number of countries, including the US, China, Russia and Japan are working on hypersonic technology vehicles that could be used for several purposes, including development of cruise missiles or reconnaissance aircraft for military use or for space missions.

Last year, the US had test flown its X-51A Waverider – an experimental hypersonic plane under development. The flight lasted for over 200 seconds with the plane reaching an altitude of 70,000 feet and a top speed of Mach 6

Which program does australia has in hypersonic vehicle..
Guys you have any info on that

Do we have scramjet engine for that?? If yes which one?? Since we are behind schedule/Unable to develop satisfactory engine for tejas, do we have such capability which wud put a vehicle at 6-7 mach speed. Please put some light on this..
regards..:cheesy:

Havent you heard of the Scramjet Test By ISRO in 2005?? and In 2008 another Test was Conducted using RH-560 Sounding Rocket....

Seems there are three cruise missile programmes Nirbhay, LRCM and HSTDV. The last two will give India huge advantages over enemy.

this is not next year
but in next century

lol As I said you are doing same thing in every thread but after a reply no sign of you!!! :P

Why people get so tensed when India tries to develop something new and try to derail....?

u also develop guys, did we object..?

It seems India is getting help from Israel and Russia on this as-well. Can anyone be more specific...

India is indeed getting help from russia and Israel mainly in wind tunnel testing as the two hypersonic wind tunnels being constructed in India are not yet complete. However, all critical systems including the engine is 100% indian!

Your question is partly answered by this reply from Indian army sir....

What he is referring to is the AVATAR project from ISRO.

Apart from that DRDO has it's own hypersonic project - HSTDV and here is the shocker........

"HSDTV Scramjet combustor has already been successfully round tested for a 20 sec duration which is the prime target for HSTDV flight!"......

Not only that but it was successfully tested at least a year and a half back!

I'll post some juicy details about that ground test with few pics, stay tuned to this thread!

Little corrections sir.

ISRO and DRDO have different scramjet engine projects. ISRO working for civilian Reusable Launch Vehicle project while DRDO working for hypersonic cruise missiles, reusable missiles etc. Both of them have done ground tests and ISRO has done a flight test as well. It was done in March 2010 by a new sounding rocket called Advanced Technology Vehicle (ATV-D01).

Well I had answered it in regard to ISRO because As far as we know the results have been Let out for the ground test which were conducted for nearly seven seconds with an inlet speed of Mach 6.... Have any Results been Let out by DRDO about there Speed and Other parameters??

Preparing a post answering just that!:enjoy:

Please bear with me for a few minutes!

Till now DRDO has not said that it has partnered with any-other country on HSTDV

We have JV with Russia in building Brahmos Hypersonic...

There are details report about ISRO tests but not so for DRDO as its a strategic project. But there were some info from 2007 Hypersonic technology seminar in Hyderabad inaugurated by than President of India Dr Kalam, where they have shown some details about CFD, aerodynamics, wing tunnel tests and materials etc. In last few years they have advanced a lot since than and ready for actual flight tests.

How DRDO gonna test it? this way...

Here are a few slides from a seminar in 2007, showing progress of HSTDV then.Noting how much the project had progressed by 2007, it is no wonder that they are thinking of the flight test next year!

Testing done in Israel.
