Economic retaliation is not a one way traffic. You stop selling, you also suffer. What would you do with idling capacities then? layoff laborers or shut down factories? China does not give any preferential lower cost raw materials to Indian Pharma companies. It can very well sell the same raw materials to any other country at the same cost. Question is - who can buy same volume as India buys? If there is some country that can, why haven't China already done that?
India is a powerhouse of generic drug manufacturing, selling it throughout the world at lower prices. On the other hand, India is a big market. Who would want to lose this big a market?
Economics is a forceful binder in world relations, countries can't ignore economic ties and inter-dependencies to settle scores. If it would have been as simple as that, China and US would have already fought a war.
