You have to answer these questions diplomatically, or atleast thats what Modi thought he was doing, if only for the puppy metaphor! If he had simply said that "yes I regret it", people would go, hey look this guy regrets it, he is feeling the quilt, hence he was directly responsible for the Gujarat riots.

Mind you, he didn't just talk about sitting in the back seat, he said whether you are driver or a mere passenger, when you run something over you feel bad. So obviously he ll feel bad when 1000 or so people died, only a maniac would say that he isn't saddened by such a thing. Its open to interpretation depending on which side of the divide you are on.

Funny how there is all this ruckus about just a metaphor and nothing about "Baccha Baccha Ram ka, Raghavji ke kaam ka" gem from Digvijay Singh.

@Spring Onion - Godhra sparked off the 2002 riots. The Muslims who carried that out need to be denounced by the entire community. Never again hopefully will such a dastardly act take place.

It is brutal to point it out, but at the time, the riots and violence in Gujarat in its own way also stopped the violence from escalating and affecting other parts of the country.

Plenty. He was the CM, not some back seat passenger in a car driven by anyone else. That analogy is pathetic, to say the least & insensitive to boot. If you are unable to see the in sensitiveness in that comment, that would probably mean that you are unable to appreciate what that conveys. Modi was a CM who was publicly berated by the then PM for not doing enough. That is not something everyone has forgotten no matter what PR is put out now.

Plus I dont know if you read Madhu Kishwar's article about Modi's meet with some clerics from communities that were affected in the riots..this is what he had to say to them,

And what do you mean he looked remorseless or unrepetant..what crime did he commit for him to be full of remorse or repentful ? . Do you expect him to make a drama like Sheila Dixit did by crying on screen while doing precious nothing on ground to actually improve the situation and kept making excuses ? He has made it pretty clear that he did everything in his power/ambit to stop the riots and there is no need to repent for that. He has also said that if found guilty he ready to face the music.

He might have convinced you, he didn't convince me. Remorse for an event as terrible as this, even when one is not directly culpable (but owes moral responsibility) is necessary for anyone aspiring to be a leader of all Indians, not just a part of the population.

And the reference to Morsi is simply a non-sequitor. He has been the CM of Guj for 12 years and no idea was "bulldozed" through against the wishes of the people. As regards not listening to opposition, which ruling party ever did that in India ? We have parties that actually even roll back good things done by the opposition once they get into power. Modi is authoritative, not authoritarian. He is decisive, not dictatorial. He expects results and drives people to get that. Unfortunately that difference is lost upon the people of this country who are getting used to "coalition dharmas" (dramas) and weak, indecisive leadership which are ironically becoming a virtue instead of weakness.

That was directed to the supporters of Mr. Modi who spend more time bashing Muslims & Christians, implicitly suggesting that they do not matter. Modi will have no such luxury because he will never win a mandate big enough & has to operate in the real world. No PM who runs a coalition can be authoritative/authoritarian etc etc. The mandate will ensure that. India is not Gujarat, the era of absolute majorities seem to have left us.. You may wish for something else(a non-coalition era) but as they say, if wishes were horses.....

We have seen Mr. Modi's position on the nuke deal, on the FDI in retail, on NCTC etc. I'm not someone who easily swallows PR. The Rajya Sabha will remain out of reach & Modi & the BJP will learn that the opposition will be as cussed as they were. No one has a magic wand, not Modi not anyone else.
