Not only this, in the next decade or so, Dhaka will become comparable to well established cities such Singapore, etc. I am afraid Karachi will become more of a 3rd grade city comparable to some city in Somalia.

No, what the developer Malik riaz did was he built the infrastructure at par with Dubai(well not exactly) the roads, the sewerage, storm water drainage is excellent, the electricity, gas are all underground. A good quality Town for the middle class to upper middle.

As you can see the houses ate small, from 150-200 sq.yds. And priced between 1.2 to 1.5 crore Pak rupees. Apts are still cheap with 2 bed at Rs. 60 lacs upwards.

It's a middle class area with no huge bungalows, but smaller townhouses.

Some areas like Golf club and some other niche areas has big plots and bungalows. Most of the town house and apts are cheaper than many areas of Karachi.

Karachi, Lahore, Dhaka, other cities in South Asia need Piazza's and Squares as found in many European countries, these open areas with multi use functions can make a huge impact on the 'culturally inviting' aspect, openess and liveable thing.

KFC is there. Maccers never came to Dhaka. There are also Nandos, Pizza Hut and Dominos. There is Gloria Jeans, not sure if there are any Starbucks.

Karachi recently has seen some pedestrian zones which were earlier unused or was a road with parked cars. Here an underground parking is provided and the upper level is converted into a pedestrian area.

I think 2035 will be a good date to pencil in.

The Japanese drafted RSTP 2016-2035 40 billion US dollar transport plan to build the metro lines, rapid bus transport, expressways and bypass roads should be complete by then.

Also the majority if not all the slums will be cleared by then.

Singapore is too much to hope for but something in the middle between what Dhaka and Singapore is now is realistic by then.

I visited Kuala Lumpur in 2005 and 2008. The state of development I saw in 2005 itself, if we could achieve that by 2040, I would be really happy.

Karachi still has a big lead on infrastructure but as Dhaka is building its infrastructure from such a low base, it should be well ahead of Karachi by the end of this decade in this index.

I didn't expect Tehran's infrastructure, culture & environment facilities to be in such a bad state. We have friends on the forum who paint a very opposite picture.

On the other hand, while there is high stability in Dhaka, but insufficient infrastructure; In Karachi, on the other hand, despite the relatively better infrastructure, but low stability is remarkable.

I see this comment a lot and simply do not understand it.

A lot of Dhaka's issue is due to centralisation, massive immigration and poor transport infrastructure.

1. Infrastructure will be sorted by 2035 when RSTP 2016-2035 is complete with metro lines, rapid bus transport, expressways and bypass roads all built.


2. Centralisation - As infrastructure improves and rise of technology, then there is little need for everything to be in Dhaka. Already the SEZs and IT Parks are being spread all over the country and this will have the effect of slowing the rise and eventually reducing Dhaka's population. BD population itself is expected to peak in 2050(200 million) and then go into slow decline to 2100(150 million).

3. Immigration - See above and this will naturally first reduce and then actually go into reverse.


Like I mentioned already, as Dhaka's infrastructure improves with greater relativity compared to others in the bottom 10, expect in a few years for it to move totally out of the bottom 10.

Decentralization and improvement in infrastructure will definitely help Dhaka better, but there are other problems along with the ones you have addressed. One big one is unplanned urbanization. The roads are very narrow in some areas, the govt will be stuck in lengthy legal battle with residents if they attempt to acquire land to widen the streets. Drainage not up to date, waste disposal system is poor. In poorer zones, people often dump waste into drains. So public awareness on how to keep a city clean is also important.

I went to Dhaka after many years this year. The traffic was intolerable due to so many construction projects going on. Which will be fine in the long run In Sha Allah. Best thing was there was no power outage, that's a great improvement too. But some of those other problem still remain.

And when people say it's beyond redemption- it's out of frustration, usually stemming from being stuck in Dhaka traffic. Deep down we all love Dhaka, regardless of how chaotic and dirty it is.

Once Dhaka has a superb public transportation network then traffic on the roads will itself reduce. BD government simply will not allow mass private vehicle ownership.

A lot of people will go on the metros and the expressways and bypass roads will reduce the traffic on the city roads.

I cannot see cycle rickshaws being on the streets next decade at all.

Drainage and waste disposal is and will be worked on. It takes time. As living standards improve then so will garbage disposal and collection.

Dhaka will be fine in the long run as decentralisation in effect ultimately reduces its population.

It seems that it is fashionable to write off Dhaka as that is what everyone says!

I like such plazas too, but they are not part of South Asian architecture, so why to copy them? Moreover, South Asia doesn't have the climate suitable for these, these large concrete spaces will probably become "heat islands" during summer and at most they will be used for 2-3 months an year during winter. Nor do we have a street music/artist scene or drinking culture, most of these plazas contain wine and cheese type of places or bars. If opened, these places will probably become crowded with street hawkers and pan and chai shops.

I have visited Dhaka once. Never stepping a foot in that shithole ever again.

Most 3rd and 4th tier Indian cities are probably worse, so technically you don't want to step in like 75% of indian cities. Apart from like 30-35 top cities and small towns in Himalayas or Western Ghats or other Mountain towns/jungle type places like Kerala or Goa or NorthEast, most Indian cities are shitholes. Also Indian cities are probably the only cities in the world with a cow and cow dung problem, no other country in the world has that problem, not even Congo or Somalia. I am from a mid level city in UP and it is impossible to walk a few steps without stepping on fresh gaumutra or cow shit, that is called a real shithole, i have been to plenty of poor countries and never seen that, since any stray cow will be killed and converted to Kebab,
