Kashmir Protests Israel raids on Lebanon; Shutdown on Saturday

Srinagar
July 21, 2006:

Protestors took to streets at many places in Indian administered Kashmir Friday chanting anti-Israel slogans and displaying placards in support of Lebanon and Palestine.

In Srinagar protestors clashed with police as latter tried to stop them from moving towards the Srinagar office of UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan.

Chairman of the hardliner faction of All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who led one of the protests in Srinagar after Friday prayers has called for a shutdown strike on Saturday against 'Israeli aggresion' in Lebanon.

Other groups including the Communist party of India, Hindu Welfare Society, JKLF, and Dukhtarane Millat have supported the call for shutdown and appealed for a complete strike.

The moderate faction of All Parties Hurriyat Conference has also denounced the attacks on Lebanon.

"It is our duty to raise our voices against oppression" Geelani said and criticised the US and west for backing Israel in 'its aggression on innocent people'.

Earlier on Thursday The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) described the Israeli attack on Lebanon as 'barbaric and inhuman'.

A resolution passed by the Jammu and Kashmir unit of CPI-M said "US-Israel aggression is phenomenal to disturb and destroy the stability of independent nations and to capture their resources through these imperial designs."

Thousands of people took to streets in Srinagar and other major towns across Kashmir Friday protesting against Zionist Regime's aggression in Lebanon.

Demonstrators clashed with riot police in Srinagar where authorities were bracing up for a major shutdown on Saturday called to show solidarity with the Lebanese and Palestinian people.

Demonstrators clashed with police in Srinagar's Batmalu locality when the later prevented them from marching towards the local offices of the UN Observers Group.

The leaders of the both factions of the Hurriyat Conference have denounced the Israeli bombardment of Lebanon and described that a worst form of terrorism and had called for protests after Friday prayers and a general strike on Saturday.

"The Palestinians are victims of aggression," Syed Ali Geelani said.

"It is our duty to raise our voices against oppression wherever in the world it takes place," he said.

Geelani deplored that innocent people were being targeted with air trikes and deprived of basic amenities in reprisal of the abduction of a few Israeli soldiers.

"We know that our voice is weak, being oppressed ourselves, but we cannot escape our responsibilities. If we had an army we would definitely have sent it to help the Lebanese and Palestinians. But it is not so. Therefore we have to remain content with protests," he said.

Geelani strongly contested the Israeli contention that it was fighting a defensive war.

"The Israeli army is displaying its might in the land of another country, therefore it is not a defensive war but open aggression," he said.

Maulana Abbas Ansari, leader of the moderate faction of the Hurriyat lambasted big powers for double standards and accused UN of playing as second fiddle to Washington.

"Neither the United States, nor the UN, and not even the OIC comes forward to stop Israel. The United States wants to see the Hezbollah finished by Israel. That is why no protests come from any where when an air raid is carried out on civilian areas.

Maulana who led a massive demonstration in south Kashmir town of Pulwama also expressed his total support for the Lebanese people.

Meanwhile different parties including Communist party, Hindu Welfare Society, Tehrike Wahdate Islami JKLF, Javed Mir group and Dukhtarane Millat have supported the strike call for Saturday.

They have appealed for a complete strike on Saturday and asked traders and transporters to "discharge their duties towards humanity." 2160/1420
