Delhi's Common-poverty Games

Michael Arthur, 14 June 2010

In preparation for the upcoming 2010 Commonwealth Games, Delhi is bursting with expensive construction and renovation projects. But these measures will do little to alleviate the living conditions in its slums, says Michael Arthur

Few would describe Delhi as a calm and peaceful city. But the noise pollution has reached a crescendo recently as construction workers toil day and night. This October, once the baking north Indian summer has eased, Delhi will stage the 2010 Commonwealth Games. In a city where millions live in utter destitution, vast stadiums are being constructed at immense cost.

Developers keen to cash in on the anticipated influx of visitors are building a rash of new hotels. Construction workers can be seen on building sites throughout the city without hardhats or even shoes, their small children beside them as they break stones.

No city as poor as this has ever attempted to stage such a tournament. The promise is that the Games will herald a new chapter in Delhi's history, enhancing its international reputation and providing a major and lasting economic boost.

But Delhi may have been sold a lie. The legacy of staging major sporting events is, at best, patchy. Athens was sold the same dream. When the Greek capital won the right to stage the 2004 Olympics it was billed as an opportunity for renewed wealth and glory for this most ancient of cities. But the legacy is a Greek tragedy of immense financial debt. Up to 21 of the 22 stadiums built for the Olympics now lie abandoned. Some have become gypsy camps. The Athens Olympics cost a reported £9.4bn, leaving a debt of €50,000 for each Greek household. Six years later, Greece is on the precipice of utter economic ruin.

But Delhi builds on. High fences are being erected to hide unsightly slums from the anticipated visitors. In the words of the Indian Express newspaper: "If you don’t see it, it doesn’t exist. That seems to be the view of the authorities."

The event offers the Delhi authorities the chance to sell the lie of the shining new India. This is a country which has higher rates of child malnutrition than sub-Saharan Africa, but which also puts satellites into space. Now Delhi is spending immense sums on a sporting event - even diverting funds specifically earmarked for anti-poverty measures.

At first, the fear was that the city's notoriously terrible transport infrastructure would creak under the pressure of Commonwealth Games visitors. But the new fear is quite the opposite.

South Africa, another country of extreme wealth disparity, is hosting the football World Cup. Hoteliers in the country have reported an alarmingly low levels of uptake for hotel rooms. According to the Daily Telegraph: "Many spent thousands of pounds renovating their properties and are struggling to recoup the costs. Thomas Cook has already slashed travel prices by more than £1,000 after only half the expected 500,000 fans booked flights to see matches live."

The World Cup, the globe's most popular sporting event, is threatening to be an economic dud. What chance, therefore, does Delhi have with the Commonwealth Games? In the global economic downturn, Delhi has been persuaded to stage a cripplingly expensive party, and the guests might not even turn up.

Brilliant analyses.

So India hosting a big sports event will not reduce India's poverty! Duh! Whats the link between the two, did India say it will, are we saying it, if its a lie, the govt will just fudge numbers wouldn't it?

India holding the next F1 will not, India sending the next mission to moon will not, infact India should not hold any event or any other mission of common national / internation interest and achievement until india's poverty is iradicated.

I agree with the author fully, maybe he'll need one pill less tonight!

Here's the alarming part of this: "opendemocracy" wrote this piece to condemn and humiliate India. This isn't written by some Asian country, instead it is written by some Aryan-supremacist (as usual). Yet why are Indians so mean-spirited towards their Asian neighbors?!! Defies logic and common sense. They should instead be focusing their hate towards those who mistreat them.:sniper::hang2:

Why are you being so petty minded?! This is written by "opendemocracy" website, so you should direct your anger towards them. :mod:

Ok, pay attention here, the last thing i need is having an annoying Indian like you speculate regarding my nationality, do or do not think. The arrogance of you people is just staggering.

Do you have any statistics to back up your claim or are you just flapping your lips?

Now brush your teeth and go to bed and your mommy will be up to tuck you in in a minute. :argh::usflag:

People were hopeless with millions of jobs being lost yet did US reduce its $700 Billion Budget?

People are starving and common man has no electricity yet does PAF compromises with Billions spent on F16s ?

What about 150 Billion spend on defence in China yet Humanatarin status is far questionable.

You cant really question ur Priorities.
All the above expenditures are a 'MUST' for the Governements... So why qs. Them?

I have been to delhi, the Games are certainly making a Rebirth of Delhi...
But the author seems to have missed these...

The state-of-the-art IGI T3 terminal for A380 GETS completed....

The DMRC... set to become worlds largest Metro while DMRC set to increaase its no. Of trains getting coachs from 'MADE-IN-INDIA' PLANT OF A GERMAN COMPANY... Specially for CWG.

The Games are more than just Name and Fame...

You can argue how many poor could be fed if billiond were saved in the inaugral ceremony of Beijing Olympics...

But Then why do u buy a car when u can walk?

Every time a poor country like india made some fine achievements, voices are raised against it.
Last time when india send a satellite to moon similar reactions are heard that,"india should not do it,as it has millions of poor peoples" !!! now it is repeated again when we r going to host cwg.

all the reports against it only highlight the negative ideas but fail to project the positive sides.there is lots of negative voices during moon mission, but when the probe successfully finds water on moon.. all are silent.why did not anyone complain about the success???
it is true that the Rs 380 crore money spent on the moon project will not help india directly to eradicate its poverty. But in the long term view it will indirectly help many times worth of money spend on it.

similarly the truth about CWG is
1)thousands of people get job due to this game directly or indirectly.
2)massive infrastructure build took place which is possible due to this game.
3)indian sports which always lacks a proper arena got world class facilities.

4)lack of audience & profit gain from this game is just a short term achievements.the infrastructures like metros, airports, stadiums will be there to achieve the long term goal......

Delhi before CWG work started to Delhi after CWG work started is a lot different... Now it looks like a capital city of 1.2 Billion Indians

just organizing a commonwealth game had made here some people burn ,what happen to this people when we will organize olympics

i remember a line from a movie

when people r criticizing u,take that as a symbol of ur success

People are looking at these games with one closed eye , they criticize the increase in prices(of fuel , gas, etc) which are primarily due to CGW , but do not realize the infrastructure , it is bringing ..When CWG are over the infrastructure will remain.

Frankly, a prospect of hosting foreigners is the only thing that shoves the govt from their everlasting lethargy to do some work..If there were no CWGs then there would be no

Delhi Metro
Renovated airport
Scores of new flyover- leading to decongestion of roads.
Games village.
renovated stadiums.

Plus a lot of money comes from various Common wealth countries for the games, all this money is invested in infrastructure.
